You're dead right. The problem is I think that many ayuntamiento staff (including councillors and even mayors) get no management training and just do things they way the person who did the job before them (which might have been 30 years ago!), often in a very inefficient way.

Things are changing though, and I think the new law rationalising local government will make a big difference. It's mad that a town of less than 2000 people has its own tax collection procedures, this sort of thing should be done at Province level at the very least.

If your car tax is unpaid it will be noticed if you sell your house, and must be paid up to date then. I am not sure how it is found out, but it is.

Everyone we first met here seem to want money for the basic of information, we had no Internet access in the first month and didnt have any friends
It confused us as it came out in 3 payments, one for 12€ then a few weeks later 36€ and few more weeks later 64€ when we googled tributaria it didn't mention car tax.

Welcome to Spain.

It's not necessary to tell you, but there are plenty of people who you can "hire" to tell you.

you must have a gas guzzler then because that is almost 100% more than my BH pays for her Peugeot 206.

how did they manage to take the money if you had no friends, etc - except the local Ayuntamiento, who most expats don't even know exist.

It depends where you live.

I pay €140 a year for a 1.9 litre diesel! It would be less in the UK.

€56.40 for Peugeot 206 1.8l petrol, seems it has a low co2 which is what it is all based on now, although with the number of potholes we have round here perhaps the tractors should pay more

I didn't think they had yet implemented the new charges (based on co2 emissions)?

It's still a local charge though isn't it? or are you saying that now, as it's based on emissions, then everyone has to charge the same figure?

No it's not based on emissions although the car registration tax is.

It is based on Fiscal Horsepower which essentially is related to engine size. The tax is in various bands according to the horsepower.

If you can find the site for your local Ayuntamiento you should be able to find it there if you dig deep enough. Look for "ordenanzas"

It varies enormously between each town. When I moved 15km it increased by 300%.

Here the rate for cars under 1600cc are about 40% of that for cars of 2000cc.

One day they will get round to basing it on emissions but because it is a local tax and can vary in many ways from place to place it may be tricky to introduce it.
