Car registration and a mysterious official in Alicante that works only 1 hour a day
Hi,
Once again I turn to the forum for words of advice.
I've been in the process of registering my car for 7 months now. I got an agent to do this for me, paying him something like 800 euros. It took 4 months to reach the conclusion that I had to pay an import tax, and that is ok - I understand, the car is from a country that is only a part of the EEA but not the EU. The tax was 3000 euros, a 30% of the estimated price for the car.
I paid the agent 3000 euros, and now 3 months have passed, and I am still on my old numbers. It has an ITV inspection and I believe I have paid the road tax of 150 euros for the year. My insurance is running out, the MOT has expired. I can't get it insured unless the process is done. My agent tells me that the registration has stranded in an office in Alicante with a man that just shrugs his shoulders when asked about the registration. My agent tells me that he only works 1 hour a day shrugging his shoulders, I suppose. My agent does not tell me who this man is or at what office he is working for. My agent actually only answers maybe every second or third email I write him.
Now I have become really tired of the whole damn thing and I actually would just like to ship the car from where it came from and get my 3000 euros back. My agent tells me this will also take a few months.
My question to the forum is: Am I being had or is this the normal procedure? Has anyone heard about this mysterious shoulder shrugging man that works only one hour everyday? If so tell me who he is because my agent is not telling me. If I think I'm being duped by the agent, what can I do? Who can I contact to ask if the tax for this car has been paid?
Saludos

Hi Siggi,
After buying the car tax, one pops along to the Hacienda or Agencia Tribunal and you receive a note to pay the first registration tax. Takes this note to the bank, pay the amount, return to the Hacienda, and they issue a form which you take to Trafico together with loadsa other paperwork.
Without detail knowledge of which man in which office, it is impossible to say

I bought in a Japanese grey import, gave him the papers, and it took about 2 weeks. Cost was about €800, and it went perfectly well
I'd say youve been unlucky

Siggi, your gripe is with your agent, insist on seeing him face to face and demand to see all the receipts. Take someone with you if you are nervous.
Having gone through the process myself in the past the local car tax was the very last thing I had to pay for as am sure cannot be done until all paperwork completed and documents issued.

Oh, and we weren't asked for any money until we went to collect the plates.

7 months it has taken with no results. Yes I have the ITV, but nothing else. If it were you would you consider the possibility that the gestor has maybe not paid the toll, and is stalling with weird stories about a man at the Hacienda that only works for 1 hour a day shrugging his shoulders? Oh well, I guess I need to confront the gestor, if he only would answer me. But my question is, what can I do legally if my speculations are correct?

Most gestors are in their office at 5pm to 7pm because all govt. depts are closed in the afternoon. My gestor never replies to emails and phone calls so like everything else in Spain you have to go in person !

I dont understand.......Why dont you deal with the gestor face to face first before wondering what to do later?

I used "spanish number plates" (google it) to re register my car.
It took about two weeks ago. I'd suggest you have been taken for a ride (and not in your car!)

It sounds odd to me.
From the point of view of IVA and import taxes, they do not apply to cars imported from the EU or the EEA so I don't understand why you are paying so much.
To all intents and purposes the EEA have the same rules as the EU with regard to taxes and many other things.

I was at first asking if this was normal procedure before confronting my gestor accusing him of foul play. It's better to get a second view before causing people grief, especially because I don't know anything about how these things and I have no one to ask except my gestor. But now I know that this is far from normal.
