car into the Spanish system

Good evening a drive a lhd car with UK plates. I will have new headlights plus rear lights fitted in days and which comply with Spanish rules. The speedo is on both mph and kpm. The MOT in England as to tyres emissions and everything else was conducted just days ago in the UK. It passed on all counts. But of course UK system and MOT does not qualify here.

The insurance is in place with Seguros.

What do I have to do next please?

Hola

If you have, or can get a European certificate of conformity from the manufacturer then you can get an ITV for rematriculation. If not then you will need a fiche technical reducida before getting the ITV test done.

Once you have passed the ITV test, you need to go to the hacienda and either get exemption or pay the "First registration tax" (commonly called the import duty by ex-pats)

Next stop is the Ayuntamiento to pay the road tax

Finally to Trafico to register the vehicle and get the registration number

Thanks for that the vehicle was produced in Swindon but I have the certificate of conformity in my files which complies with European standards. The vehicle was purchased in France.

Should I do it myself or pay for the priviledge?

I could go to Ondarra and it should pass the or their MOT test.

thanks once more

I am presuming that Hacienda is the tax office. I live in Javea so I wonder where the nearest office is. Driving to Valencia et al may be better left to someone else?

thanks once more

Hola

How is your Spanish - in theory all should go easily but if there's a problem then having a modicum of Spanish goes a long way

If French not a problem in some respects somewhat like Valenciano. I have no knowledge say for day to day events in Spanish.

However have a great contact who is an absolutely approved official translator and who has got us into the system.

I am faced with say 2000 euros plus to get the car into the system and feel sure and putting aside tax and the like it can be done much less costly?

Hola

From memory - official things except import duty is under 600€ - Ficha technical reducida 120€ lights etc extra. about 120€ for ITV, zero Hacienda, 60-200€ for road tax depending on car, 90 for Hacienda, 30€ for plates

Thank you so very much so I can now see how things mount up and the overall combined cost if one goes to a 'specialist' who does it all for you. Then of course their margins

best wishes and thanks again

Re: car into the Spanish system

We had our Picasso done last year. We left it all to one of the companies that advertise as doing it-Costa Blanca News has them within its pages.

Our total cost was 1080€ that included two new headlights fitted, the tax, the itv and all paperwork.

I would hazard a guess that yours should be around the same price and for the sake of no hassle its worth getting somebody else to do all the legwork.

All we had to do is drive the car to the itv wait for it to be done then back home again. A week later meet up with the rep to pick up new paperwork and numberplates- all done!

Ours wasn't as smooth as that, it dragged on for 3 months! but by and large it is over quickly, you will need a copy of your padron along with original registration document and proof of ownership.

One last point. The itv stations are very touchy about tyres. No odd ones allowed, at the very least they have to be the same make and model on each axle. Our had Avons all round, however 3 were marked ZR3 and one was ZR5, the 5 superseding the 3's. They wouldn't have it, so I changed over the spare which was a ZR3, no problem then, even though there was next to no tread left on the spare!

Hi and many thanks we are in agreement for the money let someone else do the leg work. Please and to avoid controversy is there any opportunity of your sharing the name via a PM have to start things going somewhat quickly

best wishes

Thanks for the help and we now have an appointment next Wednesday at Ondara. We are getting together the documents but one asks for copies of the deeds of our villa. We have a long term (three years) lease on the villa and the owners whilst UK origin live the UAE.

Will a copy of the lease be sufficient please?

Yes. You need to have proof of where you live. A padron would also suffice.

Hmmmm. That's questionable.

Best pop down to the Ayuntamiento with your passport and copy of lease and get the certificate of empadronamiento; from experience it makes life easier - just remember you need both the original and a photocopy for every single office - they should take the photocopy having seen the original
