Default Car Insurance - Refunds - you might be lucky!

Just read this in Money Saver Spain newsletter:

Car insurance refunds
If you're expecting a partial refund on your car insurance for the weeks of lockdown when you've not been able to use your vehicle, don't hold your breath! Consumer group OCU has got in touch with the main insurance companies in Spain and only Mutua and Atlantis are willing to negotiate a partial refund, whilst Reale have said that they would apply any amount as a discount for future contract renewals.

Thank you for the advice and I have written to my insurer Liberty Seguros and also my broker to ask about a partial refund. As yet I have not heard from Liberty Seguros but feel we have a justifiable claim for a partial refund or a discount on the next annual premium. Two months of not using our cars must have saved the companies thousands.

Yes, I agree car policy claims must be significantly down.

Have been checking what insurance companies have been offering and there are quite a few in the UK and many in the US offering a reduction or partial refund. They have calculated that they are going to be 1 billion pounds better off because many people have not been on the road and so there have been less claims. I am still waiting to hear from Liberty Seguros but have written to my agent to see if he can achieve anything for me. Its definitely worth asking even if they only offer 25€.

Both of our cars are insured with Liberty Seguros one of which has not moved out of the gate in eight weeks. The other has done the weekly shop but as my wife pointed out today we have used only a 1/4 of a tank in a week.
I do understand that the fully comp does cover risks that occur at home such as fire, theft and damage but the greater part must be crash, third party and injury so a refund should be possible.
Do let us know how you get on with your request.

Just a quick update. Liberty Seguros have not offered any refund but my agent has reduced my premium which means they have reduced their commission so in a way its a result.
