...for baking bread, and what is it called?

Couldn't tell you what it's called here but I have seen it in the baking section of a supermarket in La Nucia. Have you thought of asking at a panaderia? When I worked at a bakers in England people used to call in and ask for a lump of bakers yeast and we sold them just the amount they needed for a small price. Maybe they would do that here.

On a similar note, do you know where to get strong flour in spanish supermarkets/shops?
I was talking to some friends (in Spain) recently as I intend to bring over a breadmaker and they said they'd done the same thing but couldn't find any reasonable suppliers of good, breadmaking flour.
The shops didn't stock it and they didn't fancy going to a commercial bakery just for a couple of kilos.

The yeast and the breadmaking flour I saw was in La Nucia supermarket (Super La Nucia) Surely it must be sold elsewhere.

You usually see dried yeast in the small packets, it's called levadura

Mercadona certainly sell it, fresh yeast, sold from the chiller cabinet usually next to the butter. Comes in smale square blue packs and is called, as has been said, Levadura. Please be careful though, baking powder can also be called levadura as that just means 'raising' which is why self-raising flour is called harina de trigo con levadura

Look for Levadura de Panaderia. The Maizana brand is quite common.

As for bread flour, normal Spanish flour is "strong" anyway, unlike UK flour. You should be able to make decent bread from it. I have had some success with the Gallo brand but make sure you get the normal flour, not the one for Reposteria.

We also buy our flour at the local bakery in 2kg bags.

Thanks for all the info.
I've come across Levadura in Mercadona but just assumed that it was baking powder and not proper yeast.
I'll look out for the small blue packs.

I don't remember seeing it there. There is another brand beginning with a V - can't remember the exact name.

Try one of the larger supermarkets.

Their Yeast is fresh yeast, which is why it's in the cold cabinet, does keep quite well though.

Why bother when fresh bread is so cheap.??? €0.80 for a "Barra" or €0.40 for a large "mollete" ???

Maizana levadura de panadería is sold in Mercadona and Carrefour. Small yellow boxes in the baking bits and pieces aisle by the levadura (baking powder in red boxes). Carrefour also do strong white flour. Some experimenting is needed with the breadmaker. I have a Panasonic, and the flour here takes more water than UK for some reason. I generally use half plain flour and half strong. And my bread lasts a lot longer than the bakers.

Fresh bread is cheap, I agree.
However we find we always run out when the panaderia has also run out of integral bread.
Also it would be nice to bake different flavoured breads. And the kids enjoy it.

I get my yeast from the local panaderia - if I ask for a small amount they usually give it me free!

I also buy integral flour from them, it's nicer than Mercadona packet mix.

Lidl do several varieties of bread mix when all you have to do is add water. They are really nice and come with rye, milllet - all different kinds of seeds.

Put the mix to prove in a car parked in the sun - it works really well.
