It's more than that isn't it? NIE = Número de Identidad de Extranjero = Foreigner's identity number. I am often asked for it as ID when couriers deliver parcels.

I always understood that an NIE equivalent for Spanish people is an NIF - Numero de Identidad de Fiscal - ie tax number.

They are both identity documents

Número de Identidad de Extranjero and Documento Nacional de Identidad

NIF is Número de Identificación Fiscal which is used for tax etc purposes by Spanish nationals. For foreigners the NIE is used.

An NIE is identical to a NIF for foreigners.

We all have NIF's but foreigners have NIE's whilst Spanish citizens have DNI's

You will need to be resident in Spain, registered on the padron and then go through a quite lengthy process with the police. As an Expat not resident in Spain you will not be able to apply for a DNI as you must be physically present for the process.

Numero de Impuestos de Extranjero.

DNI is a driver's licence, passport... For couriers, it doesn't matter, DNI, NIE, NIF, CIF....

This is what all of the lettering actually means:-

DNI - Documento National de Identidad

NIE - Numero de Identidad de Extranjero

NIF - Numero de Identificacion Fiscal

CIF - Certificado de Identificacion Fiscal

Fine. It still doesn't matter to couriers. Whatever you have.

But for all practical purposes, a NIE is for tax purposes. There is no such thing as a "NIE card". You aren't identified by your NIE. Identification (for foreigners... not "foreigners" in the British sense - meaning "not British", but with respect to the Spanish sense, meaning "not Spanish", which may be challenging to grasp for some) ...ID is passport, driver's licence)... This is "ID". NIE will do, though, if you have it.

You must have been resident for at least 10 years, have an acceptable level in Spanish, no criminal record, pass a examination and then patiently wait for two or three years.

When the DNI card is issued you have to surrender your N.I.E. papers and pay about 10€ for the card
