You can still come unstuck with translations, even from locals. We had Luvina today which translates as Sea Bass.

Only it wasn’t, at least not what I expected. It was fish and it wasn’t bad, but not what you get in the UK as Sea Bass.

Sea Bass translated from English to Spanish comes out as Bajo de Mar. Bajo de Mar and chips? Why not?

Ordering food as a foreigner can be a risky business.

I dont think so

All the ventas on the Montes de Malaga for example are full to the brim at the weekend without having any English menus. Ditto the good places in Malaga city dont have English menus. I must add that I mean "clearly visible English menus", maybe if you ask for an English menu they have one?, who knows?

And during the week they are no doubt empty (loosing money) like most "Spanish only" resturants that dont cater for tourists , you cant expect tourists to speak the lingo so I`m pretty sure that most will give a resturant with no visable menu`s in their own language a wide berth, just having a sign saying "We speak ......" draws them in, fact.

Yes, lubina should be sea bass, and so should róbalo, but not even sure if they are the same fish????? My wife quite like rosada, and I'd like a pound for the number of different English names I've seen that given. I think Valencia way calls swordfish emperador, elsewhere pez espada (PEZ ESPADA O EMPERADOR. Xiphias gladius). Fish translations are a minefield.

Given that the Montes de Malaga ventas have been there for 50 years or more, I should think they know what they are doing.

There is a succesful chain of fish and seafood restaurants on the CDS called "Los Mellizos". There is one in Los Boliches which we've been to a few times, its really good, always full with people and a bit pricey.

I've yet to see a British person in there. We joke its too expensive for a British tourist. Not nice I know, but given that there is a 1.99 English breakfast place next door but one, then pretty much true

The only one prepared to spend money on food to be more precise

The point being that Paco del pueblo finds 100 euros every now and then to eat oysters, navajas and besugo with his family. And also the odd professional type too who may go rather more frequently..

It's been said many times before that there's much more snobbery amongst the well heeled Spanish than their British equivalent, especially regarding eating out.
I've even come across instances of them regularly walking several kms towards a posh restaurant, then taking a taxi for the last few hundred metres for the sake of appearance.

Its all about the cred.

And the only one who depends on his wife to support his lounging around at home wasting time on the net instead of getting a job

There`s definatley is a lot more flash and no cash amongst the Spanish than Brits ,One ammusing instance, I remember regulary seeing the wife of the UK`s biggest digger manufacturer driving around in a battered Peugeot 205 and over here car repossesions are at a high ,mainly mid to to top end models

Come on. The geezer regularly goes over the top to shout for Spain, isn’t it better than the geezers who go over the top to run the place down.

To those who don’t like it here, don’t complain, just **** off back to where you come from.
