Can anyone tell me why .......

I work in a British resturant that looks like an old English place it has an English menu, English staff, ( we do speak Spanish ) English beer.
Why oh why do some people come in and attempt to speak Spanish to us the whole evening.

Cos it's in Spain? :) Some time ago I went into one of the "La Tasca" restaurants here in UK, and talking to the waiter, in English, I said, "you're not Spanish, where are you from?" "Latvia, nobody working here is Spanish!" There were Poles, all manner of Eastern Europeans, but no Spanish.

But...... then when you reply in Spanish a deathly hush descends on the table.

You made them up
But i know what you mean, clients are met at the door wished a good evening and asked if they would like a drink at the bar or to go to their table, so neither of the above.

That happens to me as well. One chap who comes in says everything in Spanish and then repeats it all in English. Very odd.

It can get confusing, we frequent more Spanish than British places and when we go to a new place, despite the name and menu in whatever language, we normally order in Spanish, at least to start with, out of habit.

If the reply is obviously English, then we try to stick to it but it’s easy to forget. We often order Crema Catalan as a sweet and I’ve got no idea what that is in English.

You are one of the nice genuine ones, i'm refering to the clowns who speak as loudly as they can thinking that they are impressing people, and also trying to belittle the staff, what they don't realise is that we are in charge of his food for the night !!!
We were busy last night and we had one guy snapping his fingers, the more you snap the longer you wait !!

It dose make me laugh when resturant customers think the own all the staff just because they are eating there , if I owned a resturant I`d try to keep it a DH free zone but that in itself would be difficult on the costas, youd end up with very few customers:rofl:

Some have their uses, they entertain the other clients and also teach them how NOT to behave, staff do not respond to Oi, waving hands and finger snapping, WE KNOW YOUR THERE !!! but so are 40 others and we do our level best to give every table equal attention:thumbsup:

If a waiter speaks to me in English I am only too happy to continue, but the menu always seems more appetizing in Spanish and all too often the English on the menu is abysmal. I do not know why restaurants do not have a native English speaker check the menu before they print it. I also find it difficult to remember the English for a white, de-caffinated, instant coffee without too much milk and I am not sure what I would get if I asked for it. It is so much easier in Spanish.

As a rule of thumb I dont go to restaurants with an English menu, even a badly translated one

Always a bad sign :D
