I want to buy a used car from a dealer on mainland spain (Valencia or Barcelona) as we live in Ibiza and there is very limited choice here. I prefer to go via a dealer so they do the transfer and there is a 1 year guarantee. Please is anyone able to help me with these questions:

1. If I buy from a dealer, should they complete an ITV on the car so it is up to date for 2 years?

2. How long would it take for them to do the transfer? if I fly over one day, could I expect to take the car the next day or does it normally take a few days?

3. I already we already own one car in Ibiza in my name, if I buy another is there a higher road tax for owning two cars? Would it be better to buy the other car in my partner's name? But if so, would he have to travel to the mainland himself?

Hi,
1. You can ask dealer to ITV car before you buy.

2. It MAY be possible, but in my experience it takes longer. However, I would expect you would need to register the car where you live i.e. in Ibiza and not where you buy it.

3. The owner of the car on Jan 01 is responsible for road tax on mainland Spain. I would assume it is the same on Ibiza? Road tax is the same for the vehicle regardless of how many cars you own.

It may be difficult to pursue a warranty claim for a vehicle purchased in Valencia / Barcelona for the car - now located in Ibiza.

I would suggest it would be much simpler and possibly cheaper, going to a reputable dealer in Ibiza. Tell him what vehicle(s) you are interested in and ask him to source one for you.

Thank you Missile for your help (and thank you Rosemary for your welcome). It would be easier to buy the car in Ibiza, but it may be tricky getting quite what I am looking for although I will try.

Regarding registering the car in my name, does anyone know if that means a dealer in mainland spain would not be able to complete the registration on my behalf because I live in Ibiza?

You could register the car yourself or get a Gestor in Ibiza to do it for you.

Is there a specific car you're set on getting? If so, it might be easier trying to get a local dealer to order one in (if possible) as Missile suggests.

Just a thought about an alternative to dealers, we bought our car from a car hire firm, Goldcar, they sorted everything out including ITV and paperwork. Could you possibly try the hire firms on Ibiza?
