Rent first is always my advice cos you dont know what you really want til you've tried it.

Yes, 'RENT FIRST', you might even find that you enjoy the flexibility of renting,
enabling you to move around this wonderful country.
But avoid apartments like the plague. The noise coming from the uncarpeted floors above can be horrendous

OK so some people prefer the coast, some inland, some have moved from one to the other
But what about the Estate Agents ? ?
We are currently living in a piso, have no problems with landlord, neighbours, even has a communal pool which is kept scrupulously clean.
But...when I make the permanant move at the end of the year we really would like to have somewhere a little larger, pref with a small garden space for the little member of the family to run around in on the odd occaision instead of just going for planned walkies.
However, trying to motivate the estate agents to coming up with a 3 bed casa for rent is proving difficult.
Many websites just hold pictures, some with watermarked dates on them for 2009, some when making a positive enquiry wait 3 weeks and then tell you the house is off the market etc etc. Some are advertised on 4 or 6 other sites on the web but enquiries are ignored.
Are there any houses selling or letting at the moment - don't ask about uk property will need to start another thread

You will need to visit estate agent offices direct.
There arent as many lets around as sales probably because tenants have more rights.
Our last 2 houses would never have reached a website cos they would be snapped up beforehand. Its being in the right place at the right time to find something really good.

Hi,
My wife and I are thinking of buying our first holiday home and am wondering if the general view is that now is the best time or if prices will fall still further ?
We'd also be very interested to know on where expats would pitch the cost of living compared with the UK at the moment ?
Any tips gratefully received.
Kind regards
Gustave

In addition I still beleive that the cost of living is lower than the UK if you avoid the 'little england' mentality and buy local produce and products.
Good luck

My view is that if you are thinking buying, and have funding available, just find what you want and buy the damn thing. It's to easy to get diverted into the 'Good/bad investment' syndrome and lose sight of the fact your want a holiday home not a property portfolio. !!!!! Given the state of the spanish property market it has become an obsession for some to talk the subject to death.

Food - a major cost of living item is cheaper if buying "local"
Drink - alcohol is cheaper thank UK, nice bottle of wine yesterday for €2.15 whilst it is almost impossible in UK for below £4.00, bottled water is 90% cheaper
Electrical Goods - seem to be dropping all the time, probably due to the globalisation of products and advertising. 12m ago a TV was €20 per screen inch, it is now down to about the same as UK at €10 per screen inch. But that isn't a cost of living item.
As people in all parts of the EU are cutting back and back to living to their income rather than expanding credit card debt supermarkets are being hit and they are having to keep their prices down - Spain has more supermarkets than the UK (?)

Thank god that Spain doesn't suffer from Asda/Tesco itus yet. These Mega chains actually control what we purchase and at what price NOT the other way round as they would have you beleive. Sorry drifted off topic, rant over.....

As regards the cost of living, there's been a report from Eurostat which may interest some. Spain below the European Union average for things like clothing, public transport, food and drink, restuarants, hotels, gas and electricity. It's one of the cheapest places for tobacco and alcohol. However it's above the average for telecomms, domestic appliances, furniture and footwear. The article doesn't mention books or newspapers, but I suspect they fit into the "more expensive" category too.

Re: Buying in Spain - a good time ?
and when was it that Asda/Tesco/Sainsburys stopped controlling what the UK purchases.?
ISTR it was heavy advertising by Tesco of crates of lager at below cost that was raised in parliament not so long ago with a view to increasing the duty.
For Tesco read Al Campo in my local environment, although the cafe would be closed down in the UK if visited by an EHO, and toilets are awash....
For many years people who have come back from Germany in Army\RAF have been extolling the virtues of Aldi and Lidl ..

Certainly paying top dollar does not always mean the best.
