Thumbs up

Hi there,

I am not sure whether this message is supposed to be for anyone in particular but I thought I would answer it anyway.

My husband and I went to the Costa del Sol with the idea of spending about the same amount of money you do. (We are also in our 40's). However, I think you will find that if you do purchase a property there you may end up spending more, it sure aint cheap!

My husband wasn't keen and really did not even want to visit Spain however on our second visit we stayed about half way between Estepona and San Pedro and we were amazed at how friendly and helpful people were, they were only too happy to give us advice.

We had a really great time and bought (We hope - its not finished yet!) a great apartment. We can't wait to go back. Good Luck!

Hi Bagnut,

I, and my partner, are in our mid 50's and have settled in the area between San Pedro and Estepona for the last 1 1/2 years. We did own a flat in Bena Vista for 4 years before that, ideal for renting but too noisy and busy to live in, so we sold up and moved 2Km down the road into a little Urb. nearer Estepona.

Yes there are hidden costs but they are MUCH cheaper than UK hidden costs. An Andalucian expat Message Board recently ran a thread on living on the Costa del Sol and the general agreement was that two of you could live very well for £12000 p.a. This included 1 car, private medical insurance, Urb and town hall fees, Sky TV, wealth tax, eating out weekly, holidays etc. etc. We speak a little Spanish, live in a 60% Spanish owned Urb. and love the life.

You can live off the Costa, and many do, but it's a bit like living in the Scottish Highlands or deepest Cornwall but much cheaper than the Costa. (waiting for the flack!)

Have a longer holiday and give it a real look. Don't believe the Costof Costa!

Can I just say that when i referred to the Costa del Sol being expensive I didn't mean the cost of living, I agree that it is cheaper than the UK.

I was only referring the prices of properties in the Costa del Sol. We found that when we tried to buy an apartment there it was more expensive than we thought.

Property prices have risen significantly in recent years on the Costa del Sol. It is rare to be able to pick anything up in coastal areas for less than £85,000 unless it is in need of renovation. If you haven't decided where you'd like to relocate to yet, take a look at www.nerjaman.co.uk and see what you think of Nerja. Contact me via the website if you would like us to try and find a suitable property for you. The site also contains lots of useful info about living and working in Spain. New information is added on a regular basis so keep visiting.
