Default buying PAYG mobile - do i need NIE/Passport ?

I want to buy a pay as you go mobile phone for when i am in Spain. Do i need ID such as passport or NIE. I would rather not hand over all my details just be able to buy a simple mobile

All phones have to be registered so they will ask you for passport and NIE in order for them to complete their forms.

Rosemary is right - you will have to provide these details. This requirement was introduced following the terrorist attacks in Madrid, to try to crack down on the use of untraceable PAYG mobiles.
