Buying a Camper
 

I've been planning on buying a dayvan or camper for years here in the UK, and the time has now come
But...
I found out that it's possible to park a camper at Alicante airport for like less than £300 a year, which got me thinking

Can I do the 90/180 thing and just use as and when I like? All I'd need is cheap flights

Also, where's the best place to buy a used van in Spain? For example, I'm looking at £10-15k, Ford Tourneo here in the UK. Do they have like an autotrader website or something similar?

Just also thought, what do I do for insurance?

I'd buy here and drive over, but I would rather the cockpit was on the correct side for the country I'm in, of course!

To have a UK registered vehicle in Spain requires it to be "street legal" in its country of registration. That means taxed in the UK (no SORN) and a current MOT. You cannot get it MOTd in Spain so it would have to go back to the UK regularly.

Buying a Spanish registered camper would be a much better idea. Insurance would also be easier. However, without a Spanish address, things could be tricky. I don't think an insurance company would be happy insuring a vehicle that lives in an airport car park.

No matter where you purchase the vehicle. Storing it a long time can mean issue with reliability when it comes to be used.
The IVT (Spanish MOT) is slightly different to the UK MOT.
Here is a video which explains what is inspected and the the period of inspection. Anything older than 10 years is every 6 months.
You can turn on auto translate subtitles if your Spanish is not so good.

insurance shouldn't be a problem, and I'd expect maintenance costs.

Is there a Spanish 'autotrader' type website I should be looking at?

thanks for the link... it even translates the word 'eh' like 7000 times! But I get the drift, and expect that kind of thing anyway - part of getting to know the area, I guess

There is a reciprocal agreement between UK and Spain. I have dome the MOT for my Spanish camper in UK and ITV (the equivalent) in Spain

I know quite a few people who believed that a Spanish ITV on a uk vehicle but my understanding is it means zero. One personi know did this kept his UK registered car in spain for a few years, when he did drive back to uk he was pulled over after passport control and told only place he could go to was nearest mot station for test then tax?

Any Untaxed or no MOT uk vehicle is recorded on uk database with dvla . I would guess there will be ANPR cameras checking the number plate of every uk registered vehicle coming off the ferry

The Spanish ITV centres are quite happy to ITV a GB car and give you a worthless piece of paper. If its a Spanish car all the details are uploaded to the DGT website. They do not have the abity to do the same with DVLC.

Yes, there are plate readers that tell them everything....
I am surprised that they did not confiscate and destroy the vehicle...
Supposedly in France they will also give the equivalent to the mot on a brit automobile...Do not know if the gendarme will accept it though...
