Building Materials and DIY
Anyone out there doing BIY - Build It Yourself? I mean as in planning small home extensions and reformations, getting appropriate permissions, then costing and quantifying the materials, ordering them and paying builders by the hour to do the hard work, if not doing it themselves?
I'm looking for a glossary of Spanish building materials, common brick and block sizes and perhaps a couple of advisory articles, etc. that may help make the process a little easier. Any good sites on building Spanish techniques, both internal and external construction out there that anyone knows about please? I notice, for example, that the brick sizes available locally (e.g. LH9 - ladrillo hueco del 9 - 115x90x240mm) are not anything like many of the brick sizes that you find on the Internet by doing some searches. |

Hi unexpat,
I bought the "Teach Yourself" Buying a home in Spain which includes a CD for pronunciation. The aim is to provide a core of words and phrases to help buy, build, maintain and equip a Spanish home. Each chapter includes a quick reference English - Spanish and they cover building work, the structure, woodwork, plumbing, heating and electricity, decorating and the garden. It doesn't go to the detail of block sizes but it's worth a look. I found it in Otakers. Regards,;) John.

My dictionary has some, but not all and a pre-compiled specialist list is useful to to learn the terms before you get stumped by them ;) |
