It's minimal until you die and then your assets will be subject to Spanish inheritance law, which severely limits your right to dispose of them as you wish.

Are you now a Spanish citizen? It's not clear from your posts.

The people here dispose of their assets prior to death.

As I understand it, if you have British nationality when you make the will, with the correct clause in it, then a subsequent change of nationality does not affect it. If you make the will when you have Spanish nationality, then you cannot choose which jurisdiction you wish to apply to the will.

Fine but the subject of the post was German citizenship.

I understood that Germany allows dual nationality only if you are a national of an EU member country? Or if you were born in Germany. If this is the case, you would would loose your German p.port again. I lost German citizenship when I adopted a non-EU citizenship some years ago.

I don't know if that's true or not, but so far, the EU appears open to accommodating existing British citizens living in the EU, even if Britain doesn't reciprocate. And that actually is very smart.

But even if not, holding a British passport isn't going to bring me anything other than maybe occasional convenience (and I have very few remaining ties to Britain now), so if I were forced to choose...

Interesting idea but I don't think that a British-German dual national would lose their German citizenship automatically as a result of the UK ceasing to be an EU member state.

Just onthe originalish question. I read that the numbers before Brexit had been around 70, it may have been 76, and that the current number is something like 420 applications from Britons for Spanish Nationality.

Why would German/British post Brexit be different to any other nationality? Don't trust politicians ever.

One the better characters of the EU is that it lacks nationalism, one of the most prominent factors in British politics.

For that reason, Britain would be far more inclined to view foreign-born British passport holders as "aliens", and engage in removing citizenship if it saw fit, even if it had negative economic consequences. Brexit is a model example of the effects of British nationalism in politics.

Europeans exhibit less nationalism in their politics, are accustomed to multinational culture, and would naturally view accommodating British-born citizens in a non-threatening way (notwithstanding any potential bad feelings as a result of Britain's Brexit behaviour). In fact, it could be argued that accommodating existing British citizens who contribute to the economy would be a wise economic decision. Nationalism wouldn't likely be a factor at all.

But until Brexit is done, it's hard to know how it will all pan out. If Britain exhibits the hardline nationalist approach it has so far, EU members may feel it necessary to reciprocate. We shall see.

With the ten year resident rule, I have no doubt that there will be many U.K. immigrants, that fail to qualify, I also suspect that many have not even bothered to register.
