British citizens taking Spanish citizenship?

Hi
Usually frequent Italy forum but had a question there which may get a more definitive answer here.
Remember reading and hearing some months ago that Spanish Govt would, post-Brexit, require residing Brits to take Spanish citizenship, incl tests etc, and give up their British passport .
Could someone offer an up to date accurate picture of the situation?
cheers

I think what you heard was a really good example of False news, was it by any chance on Facebook or the Daily Wail that you heard this

no; my usual source for "False" news is the FT, Guardian, or BBC News. I remember the story doing the rounds for a period last year some time.

You probably mean this: It's more to do with dual citizenship

Unfortunately that link only works if you have an FT subscription.

British passport or British citizenship? Not that either are likely, but they are very different requirements.

Spanish nationality law and Brexit are unconnected. Currently Britons becoming Spanish citizens have to 'renounce' their British citizenship for the purposes of Spanish nationality law but this has zero legal effect on your British citizenship as far as British nationality law is concerned. The FT isn't most the reliable source for unbiased Brexit coverage.

Re: British citizens taking Spanish citizenship?

Load of rubbish. We non-Spanish have had to make out new Wills stating we want it under the regulations of our home country which I have just done,& the Notario made sure that clause was included.I have Spanish relatives & they cannot denounce their immediate relatives as I believe is usual in France & other places. So it would be a pointless exercise if true.BritInParis is correct.
