But if the expat buys a 200k house or apartment surely that helps the local economy. I think you are right though. There was an article in the paper today talking about new options for British expats with counties like Sweden, Greece , Portugal, Singapore and even turkey being the new places.

I think Turkey could well become the next retired Brit destination , they are welcome to it , not for me, Sweden, Greece , Portugal could prove to be just as difficult as Spain , I`m not sure what the deal is with the Turkish side of Cyprus ?

So UK immigrants to Spain and elsewhere should be treated differently and more favourably than other 3rd country immigrants?

UK migrants trying to move to Spain wont be treated any different than any other non EU nationality , thats the point of his thread , what will give them more chance than nationals from 3rd world countries is Brits are usually considerably better off financially although a basic UK state pension will not be enough alone to get you residency.

That's correct and as it should be every person will have different income and circumstances but Spain has to apply one standard of what it requires that income to be for all 3rd country Nationals. I agree that basic UK state pension will not meet that standard. The post I replied to implied that the amount required should be lower for those seeking Residencia from the UK.

I would imagine that many retired Brit's seeking residency in Spain would be selling their primary residence in the UK before moving. This would provide more than enough to cover the funding required for the NLV, even from a modest priced property in the UK.

Dont you have to demonstrate a monthly income of at least 2,150€ per month, and an extra 535€ per month for every dependent you plan to bring with you ? drawing this off your capital from a house sale is not seen as income , it has to be from a pension or investments .

No, you just have to demonstrate access to what Spain declare as "sufficient funds". What you are doing is using your capital to pay your "monthly income" upfront.
Each application will be looked at individually and may consist of a mixture of capital & income.

Info here.....http://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consula...ges/Visas.aspx is a little out of date but the key wording is " Financial means required to cover the living expenses and, where appropriate, those of their family members, for one year, in accordance with the following amounts: - For the support of the main applicant, monthly, 400 % of the IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples), which in 2021 amounts to 564,90 €, being 2.259,6 € or its legal equivalent in foreign currency. - For the support of each of the family members in charge, monthly, 100% of the IPREM, which in 2021 amounts to 564,90 € or its legal equivalent in foreign currency. The availability of sufficient financial means will be evidenced by the submission of original and stamped documents that verify the perception of a periodic and sufficient income or the holding of an estate that guarantees the perception of that income.. "

BTW if your of state pension age you don't need private medical cover, just apply for your S1.

Edited to correct link!

Thats not how it reads with this source:
  • Proof of sufficient income. The most important part of your application! If you fail here, your application will be rejected for sure. You need to prove you have a minimal amount of about 2,150€ per month, and an extra 535€ per month for every dependent you plan to bring with you. The following documents can serve as proof of financial means:
    • Bank statements for the last three months.
    • Letter of employment stating the salary, if you will be receiving a salary from an employer outside Spain.
    • Proof of investments.
    • Proof of other types of income, i.e. from rented property.
  • Marriage/Birth certificate is required for those applying as a dependent

I believe it might be possible as there was a post by an American who had said this happened. One thing is that there are usually other candidates in the car at the same time.

2. For income they have their UK state pensions augmented by an occupational pension(s) (sometimes quite modest).
3. Their outgoings are generally lower than they would be in the UK e.g. €200 p.a. for IBI instead of £2000 p.a. in Council Tax, cheaper booze, cigarettes, petrol, diesel and no TV license to pay.
4. They get an S1 from the UK to cover their healthcare costs (I believe the UK pays Spain around €8,000 p.a. for the healthcare of each Brit with an S1).
5. Overall, supermarket food prices are similar to the UK provided one avoids expensive UK branded products.
6. Eating out is much cheaper in Spain compared to the UK. Menu del Dia meals for two, including a bottle of wine, are widely available for under €20.

Taking the above into consideration, surely the income requirements Spain is asking for post-brexit are a bit OTT as far these type of retirees are concerned.

UK has left EU. EU members are required to demonstrate that they are not a burden to the state. 3rd country members are basically guests and are wanted because they will make a net contribution. In other words they need to have incomes that will be above any tax allowance or average income levels, hence the higher numbers. Its basically the same in UK. Brexiteers dont want frugal, careful immigrants who dont need to pay tax. They want wealthy folk or ones capable of earning large incomes

My landlady owns a driving school and she told me the following info. You only actuallly need an AM license to ride up to 50cc, including the electric Vespa type models. I use them here, they are pretty quick. A1 allows you to ride up to 125cc or electric equivalent which doesn't require any test after two or three years with an EU license. 11KW electric bikes are very quick.

I can't imagine the license being a major hurdle for most people if they have gone to all the bother of meeting the residency requirements already. You can get lessons and the theory in English and wouldn't need converstaional Spanish to understand the instructions from an examiner.

My ex did her Spanish test. It took her about 3 months and she needed to do it through a school. She said the theory was hard and few past it the first time as it requires over 90% as a pass mark. The practical was hard and she was very nervous as other candidates are actually in the car with you. She speaks perfect Spanish but found the examiners accent hard to understand. Only 2 passed. So I do not think it's a doddle especially if you are 60 plus and dont speak a word of Spanish. Still us Brits know better!
