Bottlebrush / Callistemon

Bottlebrush / Callistemon
I presume thes must grow well in Spain. We bought one and its sitting in a pot to be planted but I realised just that the place I want to plant it is well sheltered but not in the sun during the "winter" months. Its getting the sun just now at 4.30, but has been in shade all day
Has anyone got one of these planted in similar circumstances .... do I need to keep it in a pot in the sun until next year?

Had misread your post & got my book out then realised it's the sunny location/pot issue you're wondering about. From the books although this specific point isn't covered, I'd say plant it out asap, let it take its chances - however you might reconsider where you're planning to put it as they all say 'love full sun'. It's used for hedging & is the sort of thing they say don't prune.... taking from one of them (the other gives very little advice on cultivation) - Callistemon are ‘rugged & resistant to heat & drought* though they grow best in moist earth. Like a light, deep, sandy soil & will take limestone. Don’t prune. Height to 5m, spread to 4m. Ok down to -6ºC. *same book also says: Soak twice monthly in summer, once monthly in spring, keep an eye too in autumn & winter if little or no rain. (The Mediterranean Gardener, Hugo Latymer) Only thing not covered is altitude - I can't say I've seen them around here, c.1000m - may be better lower, but I don't know. Hope this helps.

I think as you say I'll just plant it and hope for the best, it will get all the sun it needs in the summer

Re: Bottlebrush / Callistemon
I have one of these growing in my garden in Essex. It stays out all year round and isn't in the sunniest spot at any time of the year. So far it's survived well for the past 4 years. Maybe I've just been lucky but as I'm not the world's greatest gardener I'm guessing that that the plant may be hardier than we think.
I'd agree with Fiona, take a chance and plant it out. If it grows in my garden it should grow anywhere!
