Default Is it better to become qualified in Spain if you plan on working there?

I've read that a lot of the time British qualifications don't mean anything to Spanish employers. Does that mean it would be better in the long run to just study in Spain if you plan on living in Spain in the future instead of doing it in the UK? Assuming there's no language barrier of course.

Depends what you want to get qualified for!

Over a quarter of the population are out of work, and many qualified Spanish people are having to leave the country to find a job. Half the rest are going on endless training courses just to get some form of unemployment benefit.

Not sure how you can assume there is no language barrier, unless you are already bilingual?

As Concierge for the Spanish section of BE I would like to say hello and welcome.

BE is a very large expat website, so if you have problems finding your way around we have concierges who will try to direct you. The moderators for the Spanish forums are Mitzyboy and Fred James, moderators are there to ensure that the site runs smoothly within the rules of BE. Problems and complaints should always be addressed to a moderador who will look into the matter and deal with it efficiently and fairly. Our members who post in the Spain Forums are friendly and helpful with a wealth of knowledge of the issues of living in Spain. At the top of the page you will find a quirkily named thread called Free Beer which is full of important and useful information. Hope you enjoy your time participating in the forums.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Plumber and Electricians have different qualifications here in Spain, that is what people refer to, you couldnt rewire a house with British spec and hook up without a boletin, you have to have Spanish sparky to sign off the work.

All my British qualifications have worked fine for Spanish employers

Generally if you are doing anything business or marketing based them you'll be OK especially if you already have experience in your field. The biggest problem is the just the lack of good jobs to apply to

For accountancy, law and engineering, you will have to do an extra couple of years at a Spanish uni to top up your UK qualifications

At the moment, it would be better to get a degree in Spain and save the £30k fees from a UK university. My wife's Spanish qualifications easily got her a good job in London

Spanish uni's arent the best, but if you are bright and get a good degree from one of the better unis, then it will be good enough for most jobs around the world
