Penelopes terrace was packed with people from all over, Dutch, German, English, Spanish and I sat in the middle of them reading my favourite newspaper. I’ve never forgotten that half-hour of bliss. I did the crossword in record time.

You can't buy the London Evening Standard in the UK now!

It's given away!

I don't know - probably being able to spend more time outside than in (usually & most of the year)

The worst moment in Spain? That’s easy – standing in the foyer of the giant Carrefour in Finistrat on Christmas Eve and inserting my credit card into a strange cash machine, one with the numbers upside down.

Having realised my mistake after the first attempt, I got a bit flustered and tried again, but must have made another mistake. With my confidence totally shattered, on the last and final attempt, I lost my memory, at least as far as my credit card pin number was concerned. I can still remember it now, but not then.

I had only just arrived back in Spain, in an area that was strange to me where I didn’t know a soul, and I had ten mil Pesetas in my pocket until I got my new credit card from the UK well into the New Year.

The only job I could find was as a bouncer outside the roughest club in Benidorm and I spent Christmas and the New Year rolling about in blood and spew.
