best way to avoid car import tax?
Hi. I have a LHD uk registered car, bought in the UK, and we are moving to spain with the car. By the time i get there, i will only have owned the car for 3 months.
If i register it then into Spanish, i understand i will have to pay a hefty tax, in addition to the registration and itv charge? Is this correct?
Can i not just wait for 3 months living there and THEN have it replated?
any ideas? The car already has a european conformity cert and LHD headlights.
would be grateful of any advice..........

You have 90 days as a tourist in Spain before you are obliged to register.
You can start the reregistration process at that time and by then you will have owned the car for the requisite 6 months.
It is the registration tax which is the expensive one as it is based on the car's value. This is the tax that you can avoid by prompt action.

It is myself and my wife going over, so does that mean SHE registers (so our daughter can go to school) but i am just "possibly in the country temporarily" until the car gets matriculated, and THEN i put myself down as a permanent resident yes?

Yes, that was my understanding of your post.
She registers immediately, you wait 90 days. Both options are perfectly legal.

Hi
I have pm'd you; to other forum members I will add that the empadron is now dated as to when the first empadron was issued. The consulate now demands that they see the empadron. This means that it is more difficult to avoid the tax unless you do it immediately you buy the house as most estate agents "helpfully" put you on the empadron at the same time as getting the NIE number.
This has caused problems for people who have had their house as a holiday home until they retire here

How olds your Jeep ? be aware they are not worth much after 5/6 years and it may well be better not to bother ,sell it in the UK, the prices for Jeep spares are frightening and I see major failures regulary in the motor trade.

Hi
Watch out on Jeeps - the tyres MUST be european (Not american) and the lights must conform - we have had problems in the past
