Mucho Thanko

Great to see you have been brushing up on your Spanish lessons before moving down.
Simple really innit, just stick on O on the end of everything.

Difficult to believe there's expats down here who can hardly string a single Spanish sentence together. ;)

On another question my daughter on a visit over asked why we hadn´t got the new Sky guide which she seems to think is much better. No idea - any answers?

Merci Beaucoup Dick !

However...............even as an Old Git/Elder Statesman approaching The 'End' (if the 'End' does comes along a couple of decades after retirement) I only wish to visit 'your' warm and friendly country a few times each year.......

Aha but I have just purchased from Amazon 'Total Spanish' using the Michel Thomas method so soon (hopefully) I'll be able to hold my head up again !

Hello to all. I have just joined your busy active forum and as is probably usual with newcomers I begin my membership by asking advice....

I have recently purchased an apartment in Costa Blanca (Playa Flamenca) and will be visiting it for the first time during September.

When I first viewed the place there was some form of freesat TV operating but of course this is no longer available although the cable connection remains. From this I assume that I already have connection to a satellite dish somewhere in the block.

As the apartment will only be used occasionally for family and friends I do not wish to contract for a regular monthly fee and therefore wish to arrange some form of ONE OFF set up. I am already in possession of two used Sky+ and Sky+ HD digiboxes and will bring these with me to test - but of course realise that with these I'll only be able (If lucky) to obtain freesat channels.

My current (UK) Sky system gives me access to all possible channels (pretty costly) and I am lead to believe that IF I take over my current UK Sky+HD box complete with the Sky card then I MAY be able to obtain similar access in Playa Flamenca. (Not really allowed by Sky terms)

In addition I have read somewhere on the internet that there is some form of equipment that actuallly reads and encrypts ones Sky card (that is normally associated with the Sky digibox). Does anyone have one ?
Legality ?

Presumably many of you 'guys' have already confronted this need so I would appreciate advice re how you handled it (or not !).

One further question : Should I buy the TV in England before departure or wait and purchase in Spain. Are prices similar ?

I look forward to any responses that you feel able and inclined to offer......

Luego

if you have a "must have" television already and you think you can pack it well enough then bring it with you.

but the prices of televisions, as with computers, has dropped drastically over the past 3 years and we are now at the level of €10-15 per inch or in some places like MediaMkt even better with special offers. So dependent on the specn you want it is comparable with the UK and you get the warranty round the corner not at the end of a Ryanscare flight.

However, some other electrical goods are more expensive, such as irons and kettles, and saucepans - but we live in hope.

just open an Amazon account before you leave the UK and so long as you spend over £25 you may be able to get things delivered to Spain - and the service is good.

nor me - his voice grates on me - I sigh inwardly (sometimes not so inwardly ;)) whenever a new student tells me they've used Michel Thomas - bad habits with pronunciation is always an issue :(

Oh Dear....

Perhaps I was economical with the truth >> which was that I bought it for my wife !

O.K. I'll admit it - having having had a few maison secondaire's in France.

I speak LOUDER and S L O W L Y and do lots of pointing (with the odd badly pronounced correct word thrown in).

They say it's never too late; but it is for me....

The new version of the Sky HD guide is currently being rolled out.
This is being done on a make and model basis.
Currently only SkyHD and Sky+HD boxes made by Sky / Amstrad have it.
In fact since it has been rolled out there have been a few tweaks to it , from feedback from users.
Pace, Thomsons, Samsungs and other makes iwll get it soon, i think they said by the end of the year.

So if you dont have it at the mo, then you may have a box that it is not yet available for.
