ATM - PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know

This information was passed on to me. I don't know if it applies in Spain but for those of you who are still in the UK or visit then it is worth remembering.


If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse. For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police
will be immediately dispatched to the location. This information was recently broadcasted on CTV by Crime Stoppers however it is seldom used because people just don't know about it.

This has appears every so often via email or in a forum. By now there can't be anyone, including robbers who don't know about it.

Well I wouldn't like to try it to find out. Just thought I'd pass it on as if it is true then it's worth knowing about. Anyone tried it?

No it doesn't work - I have had a reversible PIN for years.

Nor would you want to be standing there thinking it's ok the police are coming any second because I put my PIN in backwards.

This has been a good thread though, just to show people that myths do circulate the web, any knowledge gained on the web must be at least double checked before applying to your own circumstances.
