A fair point, but that ignores the fairly common situation among BE'ers - those of us who hold two (or more) passports. I let my British passport expire, and it was a year or two before I applied for a new one, as I already held a "valid" passport, just not a British one.

Then none of this would apply to you (or anyone else with an expired passport who has 2 or more) because you wouldnt be renewing early ! Thats includes those of us with 2 British passports.

So I'll correct myself again "Everyone (who needs a valid BRITISH passport) has to renew early whether that be weeks or months." *unless of course you have two British passports and can let one expire.
