Anyone using Electronic DNI reader with TIE?
Hi all,
Has anyone experience with the electronic card reader for DNI cards and specifically if it works with TIE? For the moment, we are using clave pin, and that works well enough, but I'm curious to know if anyone has got the relevant digital certificates from the police and got a reader to work with TIE. Thanks Ray |
Re: Anyone using Electronic DNI reader with TIE?
The TIE does not have a chip like a Spanish DNI so a digital certificate and or clave are the only options.

Re: Anyone using Electronic DNI reader with TIE?
I beg to differ, the TIE has a chip embedded in the top left corner.

Re: Anyone using Electronic DNI reader with TIE?
Would it be able to hold biometric data like fingerprints if it didn't have a chip?

Re: Anyone using Electronic DNI reader with TIE?
I think you all are right! So far as I can tell, the TIE has an NFC chip embedded with all the biometric data, but this is not the same as the one in the DNI as SpainRico points out. The DNI has a set of gold contacts and that seems to be the way the USB card readers get the data from the card. We bought a USB reader back in 2021 to use with a DNI card, but gave it up because of the process required to make it active. I was curious to know if anyone had made a TIE card work with a reader. I can't see anything on "Sede Electronica" nor on "DNIElectronico" that suggests it works on anything other than DNI.

Re: Anyone using Electronic DNI reader with TIE?
OK looks like I was wrong about it physically having a chip but I still maintain there is no option to use it to gain access digitally to government websites - quite why we could not have been given that option via the TIE I have no idea and so we have to pfaff about with digital certificates/Cl@ve.
If someone has other information please share.... |

"pfaff" is relative!
I find no particular "pfaff" factor in using my DC and Cl@ve on the few occasions it's actually required. |

Just make sure you have a working backup of your digital certificate as at the moment it takes ages to get an appointment at social security if you lose it because of some computer problem.
I didn't have a working backup and now I need to go to social security. A lesson for us all there... But especially a lesson for me. |
Re: Anyone using Electronic DNI reader with TIE?
I guess without a card reader then it is a case of what you already know is usually the best system. I've only ever used cl@ve pin and that has been straightforward. You put the cl@ve pin app on your mobile, and link it via registration to your DNI or NIE. Anytime you want to do anything online, the site sends a simple code to the app that you enter during sign in. Very similar to many banking 2 factor systems.
Edit: There is a simple option in the configuration part of the cl@ve pin app to change the language to English. |

I didn't have a working backup and now I need to go to social security. A lesson for us all there... But especially a lesson for me. When I got there, I saw at least 5 members of staff working (allegedly) in the office. But only 3 members of the public (1 who had arrived before me and was being dealt with, my number came up after he had left, then there was me, and another person who arrived just as I was leaving. It does make you wonder what they are all doing if not dealing with the public. Oh, plus the full time security guard employed to stop members of the public without an appointment getting in! |

I am not sure if you mean that you need an appointment at social security in order to get a new digital certificate (if so there are lots of other places you can go to get your ID verified for this purpose), or whether you mean that you need an appointment at social security for another purpose and it is difficult to get one without a digital certificate. I can only say that last September I needed an appointment at my local INSS office - well preferably at my local office but I would have been prepared to travel to Malaga - to register a new S1 with them. I had been reading lots of horror stories about how it was impossible to get an appointment. I went on the SS website a few times (without using my digital certificate) and within a couple of days was able to get an appointment for 7 days later at the local office. I found it was necessary to look on the website before 9.30 am each day and then a few appointments for 7 days ahead were made available daily. When I got there, I saw at least 5 members of staff working (allegedly) in the office. I'd suggest you at least try the cl@ve pin app. It did not require any visits to any office to activate.

I made an appointment at social security to get a new certificate as I didn't fancy the trek to the AEAT, however it's taken me three weeks to get one. To be honest I was expecting it was going to be worse and thought I might have problem at tax time.
Before we had our digital certificates we never had a problem completing our tax returns online by using the numero de referencia. You get it by entering your NIE and the figure from a certain casilla on the previous year's tax return, then enter the numero de referencia which that generates and hey presto you have access to the Renta Web program. |
