Anyone live on Costa del Armageddon

Re: Anyone live on Costa del Armageddon
I was aware of this problem from 1966 on.
People who are my age and have moved to the area have nothing to complain about.
Younger people well we always advise them to do their research.
Mind you most of Spain and Europe got radiated in 1998 thanks to Acerinox

Yes we have HMS Tireless the Spaniards best friend.
In 200 she was also in Gib due to a coolant leak ( water non radio active ) which gave our friendly neighbours the opportunity to jump up and down shitting themselves whilst inventing rumours by the minute.
However most of them were totally ignorant of or in denial of the radiation leak from Acerinox at the North end of the Bay.
It gave me great pleasure to say Acerinox whenever a Spaniard said Tireless and then point out the meaning of my statement.
In 1998, the Acerinox factory in Los Barrios, Cadiz melted a capsule of cesium 137 that was in a consignment of scrap metal.[4][5] The radioactive substance was released into the atmosphere and spread over Europe — nuclear authorities in France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland detected up to 2,400 microbecquerels of ionising radiation in the air, 1,000 times higher than the norm.[6][7][8] Two other factories in Huelva and Badajoz also became contaminated by waste transported to them from Acerinox.[5] During the clean-up, 7,000 metric tons of radioactive waste were dumped in Mendaña marshes, Huelva.
It is still there leaking radiation into the surroundings.

Re: Anyone live on Costa del Armageddon
it helps to fuel the anti-Spain brigade
probably would be off topic to raise the Americans purposely dropping Agent Orange in Cambodia and North Vietnam, with horrific deformities on even recently born children, far worse than thalidamide. And then there was the forceful injecting of prostitutes...............
won't go there, it is a family forum

Re: Anyone live on Costa del Armageddon
and although Christopher Morris wrote the article he also wrote a book on the subject as shown at the end of said article - so it is really publicity for a hack

I've lived in the area for most of my life and things here are pretty quiet. I asked the mayor of Palomares what he thought about all the fuss and he just shook his heads.
'Nothing to see here', said one.
'Nope', said the other.
Still, if it's in the Daily Mail, it must be true (the photo that comes with the story looks like Benidorm).

Reminds me of my favourite Private Eye front cover, just after 9/11. They showed that famous photo of the advisor leaning over to Dubya and whispering.
The speech bubble Eye printed above the advisor was "Sir. Armageddon"
The speech bubble above Dubya was "Armageddon outta here!"

Still let's pretend it never happened, eh,...... though I do recall it has come up on previous occasions on B.E.

Maybe the Mayor of Palomares is correct but he would say that wouldn't he

There are some unanswered questions regarding this story.
Original it was covered up by the Franco regime and the US government happily complied. However some American journalist broke the story.

Now as a result of the Snowden revelations in Wikileaks there is evidence the US government refuse to finance further funding and may have covered up the fact that contamination still persists in the area today.

There is also a story that in 2009 the regional government refused building permission for an extension of Desert Springs resort because they sought to build on contaminated land.

This entire story has been marked by cover up and suppression ever since 1966 and it's still going on.
I think the truth should be told by both the Spanish and US governments despite the obvious economic impact of property investors in the area.

Re: Anyone live on Costa del Armageddon
There are a lot of Britains in the area who, I imagine, would like to keep it quiet. Then the vested interests of Developers like Desert Springs Golf who are still selling properties there.
Maybe nothing to it but I would err on the side of caution, be it buying fruit and veg from that area or a villa
