Anyone on the islands. If not, why not?
 

Hi

I have noticed that nearly all posts on this forum relate to the mainland, but does anyone on here live on the islands, eg Menorca, Mallorca, Tenerife etc etc?

We have an apartment in Es Castell, Menorca and have been intending to sell it to move to either Canada (subject to acceptance), or the Spanish mainland, but are now considering buying another property in Menorca as a place to live.

Just curious to know why nobody posting on here lives on any of the islands, or am I wrong. What is the reason for this, is it the cost of living, property prices, or the lack of work prospects?

Personally, I find Menorca to be a safe and lovely island.

Please lets hear from you. It would be interesting to hear from anyone living on either the Balearic, or the Canary Islands, as to how they find life there.

I Lived in the Canary Islands a few years back, owned a place for a few years before venturing over on a permanant basis.
Don't know about you but after a few years I developed what I call "Island fever" !! so I upped sticks and moved on to the mainland.
in hind sight it was a big mistake, the south coast of Spain was a complete shock to the system.
The weather was far worse than I imagined, the people much less friendly and the ex pats seem divided into 4 distinct groups . The incredibly snooty posser types, the crooks and conmen, the costal folk and "the I'm superior to you"inland people who make constant negative remarks about anyone chooses not to live in the campo or remote villages, making out everyone else is an uncultured, bucket and spade lowlife. I didn't encounter this on the islands, of course you had a mix of types but not the bitchiness that go's on in CDS. The cost of living is higher on the CDS and of course, you take your life in your hands every time you get in a car, the roads are just soooo busy and they drive like maniacs :scared:
Another distinct difference seemed to be with the Spanish themselves, on the coast there seems to be a simmering resentment brewing about Foreigners, coming along and pushing up the price of their property, and draining their resources, I didn't get this feeling on the Islands.
If I had my time again, I'd be back on the Islands in a flash, the slow relaxed pace of life that I took for granted and the friendly community spirit ,the great weather and lower crime far out weigh the greenery and wider choice of facilities that some how swayed me.

I was under the impression you HAD TO BE ONE OF THESE to post on here. Perhaps ADSL has not reached the coast yet............. Why do you think noone lives on Dartmoor, or the Scottish highlands; they've all moved up Campo into the bundu in Spain :rolleyes:

We did consider Mallorca quite seriously for a while, having friends there, and went there a lot. However, the idea of the whole "island mindset" did put me off quite a bit and I also found it far more expensive than the mainland, like so many small islands. It was very nice there, though, but I just prefer mainland Spain personally.

Owned property in Mallorca for 10 years - holiday homes. When we decided to make a permanent move to Spain we knew we wanted more than island life that we felt would be too insular on longterm basis. Also considered health care etc. - even though Mallorca has good hospital at Son Dureta many people have to be flown to the mainland for specialist care.

We have lived in inland Andalucia (just 20 minutes drive from coast of eastern CDS) for past 4.5 years and have never regretted moving here. People generally far more welcoming/friendly than in Mallorca and prices much more realistic. Scenery + climate much nicer too.
