Anybody with good trafico knowledge
 

Going back to England July to buy a car from a friend. I want to drive it back to Spain and have it registered on Spanish plates, head lights changed etc.

The car is Cat D damage repaired which is stated on the log book.

Will I have any problems with trafico with it being a cat d car ?

I'm assuming the Spanish have their own equivalent of cat d cars, fixing damaged cars up and putting them back on the road etc ?

Sounds like a bit of a mess about but the matter of fact is the car is a 2013 Audi A3 which I'm paying £8,500 for and is like a €23,000 car in Spain.

IMHO £8,500 is a tad expensive for a cat D in the UK.
Cat D should make no difference when re-registering in Spain. You might want to ask one of the many companies who specialise in re-registering cars to confirm.

You could go to the N332 Facebook page and ask the traficos directly then you will get your answer from the horse's mouth. They aim to answer within 24hrs.

I don't think it has much so do with Trafico. The key people in this are the ITV station who will have to give it a clean bill of health as part of the ITV "import" test. I would be inclined to ask them about it first.

It's a 63 plate Audi A3 tdi s-line it was only damaged on the right wing was in a minor collision, the car is immaculate tbh but had to be registered cat d. Cat C are the worse damaged ones.

I know what cat D means and find it VERY hard to believe it was beyond economical repair for "only damaged on the right wing was in a minor collision".

Lol i don't need to look at the link my mate buys them a fixes them up for a living.

A car could have very slight damage to the body its what is underneath that matters and if a car frame and roof has been kinked due to the impact it has to be certified cat d by the breaker company the insurance uses.

As is what happened to this one.

It dont really matter now anyway as i was informed yesterday what you pay to re-register a car to spanish depends on the value of the car itself and the spanish probably wouldnt care that it is a cat d and worth less. They would just look at it as a 2013 audi and probabaly value it at top money which means i would probably have to pay a fortune to change it over.

Hi Albir Tom, I'm a retired salvage repairer so know what there is to know. Cat d will NOT appear on the V5 doc. Only cat C is on the V5. Either way it makes no difference. I knew a guy who bought all the LHD british registered salvage he could get his hands on. After pulling and panelling them he shipped them down to his brother in benidorm who used to re reg and sell them. Lots of peeps get all worried about cars deemed financially unrepairable but its all over hyped. Really bent cars are cat B.(scrap). The mercedes c class I am currently driving was one owner, 30 odd thousand miles and cat D. The only parts needed was an alloy rim, a wing, suspension arms, headlight & bumper skin. It was cat d because I also needed the drivers airbags (plural) and 4 pretensioners which are muy caro from MB. Otherwise a mint condition car. Ship your Audi down there, get it ITV'd and you should have no bother.

So it's simple enough to do then ? What do you think it will cost me in total ?

The car is £8,500. I was going to insure it via tempcover for a few days £90 so i can drive it down, It is looking £400 on the ferry to Santander, then Diesel costs and toll charges down to Albir then the re-registration, light change, itv and suma, then insurance.

Starting to think is it really all worth it but im sure even after paying whatever out im going to end up with a lot nicer car than that sort of money can buy in Spain.

To be honest £8,500 (10,000€) would probably buy a newish ford focus over here at a push.

If it is the 2.0l TDI and the CO2 emissions are below 120g then there will be no registration fee to pay, irrespective of the value.

There will be other fees and ITV charges, plus the cost of changing lights etc if needed, but that's about it.

There is no import duty if the car is imported from within the EU. What is erroneously often described as import duty is actually the first registration tax which is paid on all cars including new cars bought in Spain.

This used to be based on engine size and type, but this was changed a few years back to an emissions based system. There are 4 bands with different tax rates. The first band, for cars with CO2 emissions below 120g is zero % tax. The highest rate, for emissions over 200g is 14.75%.

There is also a concession that applies when people bring a car that they have previously owned for 6 months, to Spain as part of a permanent move to Spain. If you register the car very soon after you arrive, then the tax is waived.
