surely both countries have their problems, I certainly havent got rose tinted specs on and wouldnt expect it all to be a bed of roses, but at the end of the day, all we're looking to do is buy a holiday home an try to spend as much time as we can there and soak up the mch needed sun that the UK is lacking !!!!

I'm not saying its bad, but the economy was more exposed to house building and selling than the UK and the unemployment rate is far higher.

When it comes to buying and selling there are a number of extra costs you should examine, as well as dinero negro issues. If you stay UK resident for tax purposes (by spending more time in the UK than Spain) you will pay an income tax on the letting of you property - even if you don't let it out. You may also be exposed to a capital gains tax when you sell it (although probably not as prices are dropping).

You should also be very careful over the legality of the property you buy, many people have bought houses thinking they were legal (with council tax bills etc) and found out they weren't and had their electricity cut as illegal builds. Many of these people used Spanish solicitors. Some people have bought houses in the Valencia area and then had the regional Council basically blackmail them for money to improve the local roads - quite large amounts of money.

Moving inland gives you cheaper property but requires you to learn Spanish more quickly and obviously has less access to beaches or British-type shops, don't underestimate your desire for British chocolate, sausages, beans and so on.

Some people have moved to an area recently "opened up" by Ryanair or Easyjet, only to find later that the flights stopped. Make sure you are within a sensible distance of a established airport, especially important if you are going to be coming back and forth.

I would recommend you get the Living and Working in Spain book - helps you with a lot of the legals and taxes etc - http://www.amazon.com/Living-Working...5089136&sr=8-1

Most places, including the cities and coast, you will have to learn some Spanish to get buy. It took me five years to find an area that suits me (I dont like Valencia province at all), and another 18 months to find the right house. It is big, 300 years old, perfectly habitable, and I am going to do various things to it over the next 3 years. It is next to a huge Church, a 12 century castle, in an old Pueblo Blanco, in a World Heritage Zone. All for the price of half of a pokey terraced scrap heap in some slummy town in the UK. Do your homework, be positive, learn some language and wander around the southern half of Spain for a few years until you find what you want. Renting in a lovely town like Antequera or Ronda would be around 500 euros a month for a big family apartment. It would give you a base to look around from and allow you to immerse yourself in the local culture.

If you're looking for a job, you should try for one in the Junta De Andalucia Consejo de Turismo.

But seriously, this is one of the better comments I have seen on these threads. I love the Ronda area, and Inland Spain is, in general, an experience that is worth having.

Having said that, I moved from Murcia to C. Portugal (Ribatejo) for the same reasons you moved to the Ronda.

My belief is that Portugal, away from the Algarve, is much more stable in terms of economy but, at the moment, is not as good value as it was, even a year ago.

Nevertheless, if you have the expendable income, now is a good time to invest.

I dont miss sausages, I dont like baked beans, and I live most of the time in Switzerland where the chocolate is better than in the UK. I greatly prefer Spanish food to English and anyone moving to Spain (or anywhere else) is simply going to have to get used to the local diet in order to survive. As for the beach, I dont want it nor do I need it. If you need it then OK, but it generally means living in some expats ghetto, where everyone speaks English or German, drinking cheap booze most of the time, in hideous blocks of flats with traffic roaring past, completely isolated from the local culture.

Further to my comments above, which were put on late last night so I didnt expand them. The area I mentioned has very good transport links and they are getting better as I write this. Reliable UK flights exist to Malaga and Sevilla (naturally), and also to Granada (one of the worlds best cities and very cheap to buy - dearer to rent since it is a big university town). I mentioned Antequera, which is stunning in every way, is an ideal town to live in, very friendly people, lovely bars, squares and old town, completely walkable, but is more expensive to buy into than most of Andalusia. However, renting there is cheap, and there is a lot of stuff available to rent. Just walk around town and look upwards for the signs outside of apartments then phone the owner. It really is that simple. The minimum let will be for one year. The train services in the region are excellent, and with the AVE now being available to/from Antequera you can get to Madrid etc really fast in absolute luxury. A new airport is being built right now on the edge of Antequera and I think it is scheduled for opening in about 18 months. It will make getting into that zone and up to Ronda etc absolutely simple (although it is only 40 mins by coach from Malaga now). The coach service everywhere is Spain is outstanding and outstandingly cheap. I suggest you give it a try at Easter week (Semana Santa), when the processions are taking place half the night every day, when the music is playing, the temperature is perfect, the tapas is most eatable and whole families are on the streets until 3.00 am. You will then wonder why you didnt move to Spain ten years ago. I can give you full details of a lovely hotel in the centre where I have stayed dozens of times for 25 euros single or 35 euros double a night (yes, the prices are correct - try getting that anywhere worth staying in bloody depressed Britain!). Hope that helps.

its funny you say this after stating you didnt like 'all' valencia province, as i dont recall any of the coastal towns near valencia to have expat ghettos. in fact, visiting cullera, port saplaya, sagunto etc you'd be very hard pushed to find anyone speaking anything other than spanish or valenciano.

Try it and see is good - rent first and then when you've decided where and if (!) then buy.

Don't buy as an individual, buy through a UK company and you will then legitimately avoid all the horrendous Spanish taxes. This is easy to do. It also makes selling on far easier as the purchaser of your property will avoid a lot of front end taxes too.

Good luck and wlecome to Spain

In my opinion, and I am as welcome to it as you are to yours, the coastal towns around Valencia city are pretty awful and quite dull. And I know Brits who live in them. I greatly prefer inland Spain, and particularly the Andalusian provinces. The comments in the quote you used are mainly concerned with food and I stand by them. If you want UK sausages and baked beans then stay in boring old Britain. Fact.

absolutely agree with you, if we all wanted the same thing, the world would be an extremely dull place!
my point was more the fact that in many of the valencia coastal towns, and more so the inland towns, you'll be pushed to find an english speaker or english food.

Do be very careful to choose a location with proximity to Spanish airport which is well-served by several UK airlines if you plan to return to the UK on a regular basis.

Our daughter is doing a 'year abroad' at the University in Sevilla. We live in the south of England and she can easily fly back to Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Heathrow or even Bristol or Southampton. Other people on her course who live further north are having problems getting home easily and quickly as Ryanair axed it's daily flight to Liverpool over the winter, and flying into Stansted or Gatwick (served daily by Ryanair or Clicair respectively - the only UK carriers flying direct) involved them in a travelling time of up to 14 hours! Although there is a connection by train from Sevilla to Malaga (which has a greater choice of carriers), I know of one case where the train suffered a delay causing the lad in question to miss his flight home ..

Just a thought!
