Yup, but I think War Horse is written as two distinct words (much to my disappointment). The answer is only one word of 8 letters. Will go with War Horse if nothing else comes up. Thank you for your help.

The entry deadline is not for another three weeks or so (plenty time left). This is the only question out of around 150 that I'm really struggling on. (Each section of 10 to 20 questions takes a different theme). Its a quiz started by a retired headmaster who spends most of the year setting the questions and has been running annually for around 20 years. One of the objects is that the answers cannot be directly googled. I've won it a couple of times but not in recent years. Always had one answer that has let me done. I believe that the BBC Eggheads participate so now you really need 100% correct. Entry is by invitation so I cannot really post too many of the questions I'm afraid.

Hello Rosemary, I thought of Carousel initially as well but I think this is a musical rather than a stage play and I don't think car really works for washer. Thanks though. I missed the warhorse anagram until it was pointed out to me on the Italy forum last night. It's the best solution so far but I'm almost thinking that it could be unintentional and there is another answer meant.

I like the anagram answer of warhorse but it is normally two words so surely that rules it out.

I saw that as well jimenato. Thanks. The trouble is that the person who sets the quiz is really fastidious. If there is a hyphen or an inverted comma he inserts it. In twenty years, I've never known him to be anything less than precise. Still, I suppose there could be a first time. In a different section one of the clues is 'Happy? One of them is'. (5,6) or (5,7). So he is making clear that he will accept two answers, either Seven Dwarfs or Seven Dwarves. That is how precise he is. I think with war horse he would have done (3,5) or (8). Thanks again everyone, it's the best solution so far and I will go with it unless something else comes up.
The othe thing is that all the others answers in this section (and I've confident that I've nailed them all) were written directly for the stage. The warhorse play is an adaption of a book.

Yes, I have (as the verb?), but I haven't got any further! I've given up making something out of o-ring.

It's very frustrating. I just can't see how 'object' comes into it.

To recap, the clue is written 'Washer - or round object'. I was initially thinking that the washer part was also a round object. For washer I came up with char and lave but that's about it. I really appreciate all the help. Globe, sphere, ball, ring, circle?

A washer can also be called an O-ring.
I can't find an 8-lettered word, let alone the title of a play!!
