I know other countries are pushing this - went to Italy a few years and was charged...

Italy charges up to 7 euro per person per night in tourist (sojourn) tax, but 1 euro per person per night for the vast majority of tourists in Valenciano is neither here nor there. Majorca has been charging 2 to 4 euro per person per night and it hasn't dented tourist numbers.

All in all I think its just another attention grabbing headline..
Its not a new thing and to be honest as long as the money is used to keep the place clean then why not.
I paid a 'hotel' tax in Madrid years ago, its been a thing in the States, Canada, Australia and most of Europe for years.
In fact we even paid a 'room' tax in the caribbean in the late 1980's
The money at that time was to pay for the beach cleaning services so the locals didn't have too.
To be honest its not something I've even considered as a deal breaker on a holiday and even at €1 per person a day its not even a couple of pints worth in Benidorm.
Don't forget the 'tourist' tax, which is actually nothing of the sort, the visa waiver thing for the EU (something the UK voted for before Brexit), which joins again the Us, Canada and Australia at least with an e'visa..

This gives the details....

I don't think this is new. I am sure some areas have had this tourist tax charge for some time? When I have booked rooms in the past from various sites I seem to remember it showing either tourist tax included or a small charge under local tourist tax. Its a non story trying to make people believe because we are no longer EU then the EU is penalising the Brits.

I agree with you. Several years ago before Brexit and Covid I went to Portugal with people of all nationalities including a couple who were on holiday from the UK and we were all charged an amount of "tourist tax" in Lisbon.

Where we are the tourist tax was introduced in 2012 and every visitor pays it. Apart from that, when you go on holiday a lot of people are prepared to pay a premium and those who seek low cost holidays go to Bulgaria, Albania or Turkey and so on. Since it's been introduced the beaches are cleaner and it pays for the mess, so that again brings other people who value these things.
I know that I'm going to pay a bit more on holiday than back home.

I object to the headline, "Spanish holiday hotspot bringing in new British tourist tax.." because of the obvious way it seeks to appear only the British will pay. That puts me totally off this crappy newspaper. Tourist tax has been around for years in many countries. Nothing new.
