Another car hire question

Sorry if i am asking an age old question.
Do hired cars come with the regulatory two red warning triangles, reflective jacket, etc. I understand the old policia are tightening up and bolstering gov't finances a little. Thanks.

They should do, and most do in my experience, but might be worth a quick look in the boot before you set off.

last time we hired was 2 years ago, it had one hi-vis jacket, never saw a triangle, but then didnt look for it

my own car has 4 hi-vis jackets, 2 triangles and a magmount yellow flashing light in a box in the boot, a further hi-vis on the drivers seat.
now stop me and tell me I failed the inspection :p

Re: Another car hire question

I must admit this is something that has crossed my mind as some hire companies they are provided and some they are not. Record do not seem to provide them. Has anyone who has used Record ever actually demanded them and what was the outcome. Strikes me that if you are stopped it will be your responsibility and that the Police would not accept that they are not there because it's an hire car. I have also read somewhere that some Co's charge these as an extra surely that can't be right if it's a against the law not to have them. I have also read that some require a deposit to provide them but most charge a deposit to take the car so surely that should cover it.

Re: Another car hire question

something to be considered is....
do the Spanish comply with this requirement in their private cars ??

saw a broken down vehicle with bonnet up the other day, no triangles, no hi-vis, but then no police.

I think the law abiding BE will be more concerned than locals about ensuring compliance in any vehicle, hired or not.

I must say around our way I don't think I have seen a car without an HI Vis draped over the drivers seat, whether they have the rest???????????

Re: Another car hire question

I do have an Hi Viz that i took over for this purpose no doubt I should just invest in a cheap pair of triangles. I believe the spare bulbs are no longer required?

Re: Another car hire question

Thanks for that folks. It does seem to depend on what area you are in at what time, some are worse than others when it comes to Policia presence. I was told it was the responsibility of the car driver to comply with the rules i.e. triangles etc and not the hire company. I am awaiting a reply from my hire company to confirm their poisition on this.
Friend of mine told me someone he knew got pulled and got the book thrown at him. That was for not having 2 triangles, no reflective jacket, no spare set of glasses in the car(needed as he wears glasses to drive) and was driving in sandals. He got warned also for driving topless? Am i being wound up or what? Good job he was not speeding through a tunnel without his lights on as well, else phew....that would have cost. Thought they needed tourist euros! I have never had problems in the past hence my checking all this out.
Spare bulbs, is that another? Thanks.

Re: Another car hire question

It was a rule that you had to carry a spare set of bulbs and the tools required to replace them. However replacing bulbs on many cars can be very difficult these days and often requires expert knowledge. I have read that this requirement is no longer enforced?

I found this on another web site which implies not required other sites say are required and others that it is advisable I'm sure someone will know correct answer.

Put simply, you no longer need to carry spare bulbs in your cars in Spain.

Up until now you have had to carry spare bulbs and the tools to change then, although last year it was announced that te Trafico Guardia wouldn’t be imposing the fines, which used to net them around 2€ million a year.

The reason given is that the technology means that is is harder to actually access and change bulbs, and that it is no longer safe of viable to change them at the roadside.

Re: Another car hire question

We have a holiday home out near Denia and know of several locals who have been 'got' for wearing flip-flops, or warned for being 'topless' (you might be stung by a bee or a wasp, allegedly). Unfortunately, budgets for police pay have been reduced and they are out to recoup the cash somehow ... in all fairness, the 'flip-lop'/backless shoe thing came to prominence when a French tourist (wearing backless shoes) lost control of his vehicle and crashed through the front window of a Farmacia in Javea :(

Re: Another car hire question

Yes I am sure it will have more to do with topping up the coffers than it has to do with road safety although I can see the danger of driving with flip flops.
