Well said.

& to be fair I don't think we'd be right to assume she joined just to meet gay couples.

Check her original post. She did say ´Just wondered if there were any other middle aged gay or lesbian couples close by who would maybe be interested in meeting now and again?

Any way, this is going way off topic. I hope she finds friends.

I would guess that it is mainly a hetro forum judging by the number of posters who talk about their children etc.

Have you tried searching from a different standpoint, ie, first finding a gay forum that you like, and then finding out where the members actually live,
Given the large number of expats there are in Spain, I should think that you stand a better chance of finding people in your area that way.
What about the Spanish site too?

Never mind, you've found one in another forum, you seem to be doing the rounds.

Et tu ;) you may have noticed though that I joined the forum more than 18 months ago so I think "doing the rounds" is a bit harsh don't you ... although I have noticed to love to be "alternative" to everybody else.

You make it sound like being gay/lesbian is a species.

I have noticed that many local newspapers have a "meeting up" section.

Maybe look at the ones in your area.:)

To be fair.. its the OP who set out to section people off and pigeon hole them, until then no one even gave a second thought to it.

No actually, the OP didn't set out to "section people off" ... I was merely asking a question. Would I have had the same response had I said I would like to meet up with other single mothers, or middle-aged ramblers .... I seriously doubt it. But then experience has taught me to expect the types of comments I had.

OP knows my concerns about being seen to criticise in any way (which in any case isn't for me to do); however saying you'd like to meet up with other single mothers, or civil war re-enacters, or ramblers, isn't the same as saying you'd like to meet up with other middle-aged heterosexual couples. I think the most relevant comments have been along the lines of identifying that some people's attitudes to homosexuality preclude meeting potential friends because of the possibility of encountering pre-conceived ideas before any opportunity of understanding/friendship can take place. Doesn't take away my misgivings about the notion of, for example, me & OH seeking out another couple (or individual, or couples, or whatever) for friendship simply on the ground that we are heterosexual. I know JnK obviously has friends full stop with no thought to their sexual leanings. With that, and only that, in mind, the thread does no favours.

Maybe the old adage "walk a mile in my shoes" would work. I despise discrimination on any grounds whatsoever and believe me I've seen a lot of it having lived in South Africa for many years. Why do we all congregate on this site when the only thing we have in common is being an "expat"... why can't people seek other people merely for friendship on whatever grounds they want, be it sexual orientation, religion, colour, nationality, stamp collecting, bird watching, or anything else. I don't get in this day and age why it's a big deal although I do understand why, if there are any other gay and lesbian people on this forum, they don't stand up and be picked on ... sorry counted. :frown:

I find that a bit ironic, aren`t you discriminating against un-gay people giving you their views ?
