Duuuuhhhhhh.

There is a difference between solid facts, and descriptive writing. Are you really going to try and claim that if you require facts to be proveable, you can't use descriptive writing and hyperbole?

I love reading, especially good writing, and even if the writers lapse into metaphoric hyperbole it’s better than factual dullness.

I lived in Spain a long time, used to love it. For about 5 years I never visited the UK as close family wasn't living there (was Holland and Paris for me). Rest of the family visited us. Always had a nice feeling to land back in málaga. One time driving from the airport and I thought what a shitehole the coast was looking, from then on things went downhill We bought a house in Florida intending to spend winter months there. Moving 2 dogs and a cat every 6 months Didn't work. Started visiting the UK again, lots to do even in winter and I thought hey the place isn't half as bad as the Daily Mail says. Spain has been spoilt...well the CDS and CB has in my opinion.

To say that the UK has lost it's identity, perhaps but doesn't Spain have a similar amount of immigrants? Also anyone who grew up with spanish contacts as I did would say the same. Our village in the UK has ONE foreigner, a Chilean woman who married a local 22 years ago.

Yeh, been round that way a few times, quite a while back.
Galicia seemed quite diverse in itself, with some fascinating countryside and a fair old mixture of communities, most of which seemed friendly enough, but apparently not always seeing eye to eye with each other.
Not quite the roughest neck of the woods I've stopped in, in fact I vaguely recall one or two reasonably civilised gaffs, though I did end up one night kipping in one doss house that was little more than a tiny underground cellar.

I’ve also lived in Spain for a long time and have also become disillusioned with some of my life here, and I may also get to the stage where a move to another country, probably back to the UK, will become a reality, but I’m not anywhere near that stage yet, and may never get there.

Strangely enough, all of my friends and acquaintances who have moved away have not regretted it.

When I land back at a Spanish airport after travelling, I still get that exciting feeling that I’m home again, and I try and close my eyes to the awful mess along the coast where I live, a concrete monstrosity that stretches further than the eye can see.

CDS and CB may be ruined for all I know, but that's just a tiny % of Spain.

As for UK identity, what the hell is that? We don't have a national costume, most English don't know what their saint's day or national flower is, we don't have a national dish.

My vision of what always made England great was its tolerance of different cultures and immigrants (which is different from simply having the dregs of the world flooding in.)

I do agree when at the coast recently i thought how un loved and un- cared for the area and buildings looked. Would not encourage tourism. Plus inland the empty properties just deteriating in the sun Shame

The North of Spain is still pretty unspoilt. Sea an d mountains and green meadows. Great food and good people. Very different from the urban madness that is the South. Also, we have bagpipers and cider up here. I will never live anywhere else.

I agree with you that it's a great place. Two slight drawbacks for the majority of Brits though 1 ) It rains more often. Brits want to escape the rain 2 ) Lack of other Brits to socialise with.

Here's some views of Cantabria (central north)

It's a really beautiful area right across through Cantabria, Asturia and Galicia,... though next time I visit I must try and remember my ear plugs.

Yeah, you´re right. It´s easter now and right outside my window I can hear the first screechings of the bagpipes.
Nowhere in Spain can you sleep past 10 am on a holiday.
