What is the best way to travel from Alicante to Girona, without driving, please?

Although there are airports in both I can't see any flights between the two. Alicante to Barcelona by train approx 5 hrs. Barca to Girona 1 hr 20 mins.

By bus - take your sleeping bag.

Both cities have an airport, train and coach stations, yet they are so hard to travel to easily, without a car. A motorway links the two, too.

Looks like I’ll have to fly either via Madrid, Barcelona or even Malaga.

What about via Palma? that may be shorter.
