We are looking to move to the Alicante area. We would like to be no more than an hour from the airport and would prefer to be near the seaside. Not familiar with this area so can anyone recommend some places we should visit ?? We would prefer not to be on a big urbanization if possible.

Does it have to be Alicante? Valencia airport is wonderful and living an hour from there gives you loads of scope. We can do Valencia airport in 45 minutes (just to give you an idea). Alicante airport for us is about 1hr 15 mins.

I always used to fly to Valencia because it was cheaper. However the route I used , Easyjet out of Stansted has been discontinued and I believe Ryanair have scrapped all flights to Valencia. Shame because I used to love an occassional overnight stay in the City.

This isn't true. Between Alicante and Villajoyosa there are San Juan and El Campello. Both are decent places and neither dripping with Britishness. Inland there are lots of decent places too, all within 15 minutes of the beach, airport, Cinemas, several large shopping centres, and Alicante city centre. Also, if you don't like the dry land of the South Costa Blanca you can go inland a bit. Taking the motorway out of Alicante towards Alcoy once you get to Tibi (about kilometre 15 from Alicante) the land turns as green as it comes in the whole province. There are some lovely towns around this zone too.
I do know Alicante City and Benidorm quite well, I know the latter like the back of my hand, to elaborate would have extended my already long post to unacceptable levels. San Juan and Tibi are not places dripping with Britishness, but I got the impression that the OP, coming from rural Almeria, was looking for, perhaps, more of it? And Alicante has two Corte Ingles, I forgot about that too. And Benidorm Palace? It would fill a book. |

Dude, sorry to disappoint you but that is a seasonal route. I think the last flight out of there to Stansted is on Sunday 1st November.
You gave me a bit of a shock saying the last flight out was in November! |

I've just looked on the Ryanair web site and they have flights from Stansted to Valencia right up to and beyond January 2010. This is a reduced service four days a week and only one flight a day.
You gave me a bit of a shock saying the last flight out was in November! After a few months and no positive response from Valencia,Ryanair announced they were going to pull the plug and cross the airport of their flight list. However there was something in the news not so long ago regarding the possible opening of negotiations again. Wonder if anyone is aware of the current and likely future of this issue as my family normally use his route to visit me? |

Another rocky coast leads on to Moraira, a bit posher than further south and, around a detour, to Javea, on the south side of the Montgo mountain. Javea is roughly split in three, the Old Town, the Port and beaches, and the villa areas in the mountains. It really has everything you could wish for in Spain, all in the one place, and naturally costs you a bit more. still love living here though:D |
Re: alicante area??
We are between Moraira and Javea and it takes pretty well an equal amount of time to get to Valencia and Alicante airports.
Ryanair flights to Valencia are much cheaper than Alicante and its a much nicer airport than Alicante |

so Denia upward are 2 hours plus |

still love living here though:D I am glad you said that ... cos I thought I had missed the shops :( But Javea is gorgeous, and there is plenty of excellent shopping less than 15 minutes drive away (Portal de las Marinas or Denia town centre) ... and I love the Arenal promenade on an autumn evening when the tourists have mostly gone home and it is full of Spanish/English families, kids and dogs! |

Re: alicante area??
On the two occasions I've flown from Valencia, the same, tiny Guardia Civil officer swiped my passport at the security office, smiling at the same time as though to say, "We've got you this time, pal."
It's never happened at Alicante, they wouldn't have the time. At Stanstead, they make the time, it's easier to get into the US than the UK, and I always get worried when my passport gets swiped, I remember not paying a parking fine in London about 20 years ago, and that speeding thing on the M6 even more years ago, will they remember? |
