This was from 12 months ago, and exports have increased even more since then. I think the last thing we need now is a strong pound, I'm with jackytoo, the weak pound doesn't worry me at all. The Footsie was over 6000 (until today!) my investments are as high as they have ever been.
The manufacturing sector is growing at the fastest rate in more than 15 years, boosted by an unprecedented leap in exports of finished goods, according to a closely-watched survey.

Suppose that depends on what you mean by strong pound, also depends on your situation some will some won't. Point yes per the comment 12 months ago it helped exports and possibly killed off some imports. However doesn't seem to be having the same affect now and it has been stated that the manufacturers are not making full use of the weakness choosing in some instances to keep prices higher. Lets face it out of those on here who preferred the pound at 1.20 ish to 1.08 or pound to euro, like I say depends on your situation.

When our exports outway our imports then maybe a weak pound would be good, But that isnt going to happen. Goods are produced cheaper elsewhere and there is more available industrial areas in other countries, also manufacturing isnt snywhere near as profitable as it once was. The UK right now needs to concentrate on what its good at, the financial institutions and spending, both of those things require a stronger pound. Also its a psychological thing. A weak pound sends the message that the UK is a weak country!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course LOL!! However, whichever side you're on, it doesnt sound good does it - it kinda suggests lack of confidence by "those in the know" rightly or wrongly!!

That said, when the last government was in power there did appear to be almost a conspiracy to keep it weak. You could guarantee that if the pound rose too much, Mervyn would come along with some damning news to send it spiraling down again!!!

There are lots of good things going on over there, you dont hear about them cos they dont want you to know and if they were to big them up a bit it would inspire confidence, but he doesnt and depressed, downtrodden people are easier to control. He's a "the glass is half empty" kinda guy who's had a charisma bypass!!!

There are those that would disagree, foreign investment has increased since the weak pound. Foreigners are also buying up London at a crazy rate.

Weak pound boosts exports and foreign investment
Sterling has handed Britain a double economic windfall, economists declared on Tuesday as statistics showed that the weak pound has boosted exports and drawn in foreign investment.
Meanwhile, foreign investors are pouring cash into the government bond market at such a rate that in two months alone they have bought more gilts than in all of 2009, according to figures from the Bank of England.
The two pieces of news are both directly linked to the pound, both by dint of its depreciation over the past three years, and Britain's retention of its currency independence rather than joining the euro, which has boosted safe haven buying by investors amid the Greek fiscal crisis.

it is my understanding that the very low interest rate is what is keeping the pound low. Foreign investment may be to buy up companies with worldwide sales and cache but not to save money as there's no interest to be gained.
That sort of money only goes where the interest paid is high.

The UK trade deficit worsened in May, so it seems that the low pound hasn't helped as much as hoped.
I do wonder though, if all transactions get recorded. Surely in the long run the value of imports should equal the value of exports?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14122212

The gap in the UK's balance of trade widened unexpectedly in May.

The overall deficit for the month was £4.1bn, according to the Office for National Statistics, up from £3.1bn the month before.

The widening deficit was driven by a 13% surge in imports of semi-manufactured goods, notably chemical products, which rose 20%.

The overall goods deficit, excluding services, rose to £8.5bn - well above the £7.4bn expected by analysts.

Well that aint gonna happen while the pound is low. We import far more than we export and of course when the pound is low, our imports become expensive and our exports become cheap as chips....!!

Uk is 11th biggest exporter according to stats.

One of the reasons exports have fallen is because the rest of the world is struggling too.
