when I read this on a news website earlier I thought he must be one of the few that hasn't been indicted or accused or even thought of for being involved in a sex scandal
good for him
he was a ground breaker in television journalism and presented a steady laid back style that regrettably modern "of the minute - in your face" journalism has now sunk to

shows that we are also getting old

And as opposed to modern celebs he truly appreciated and was grateful for the charmed life he lead. In return he treat all he met and particularly the viewer with respect. A true gent.

Was he as charming off screen as onscreen Fred?

A great character.

Was he the one who accepted the German surrender in an Italian town during the war because the Germans couldn't face the humiliation of surrendering to the Italians before the Allied forces arrived ?

Exactly the same on or off screen.

What you saw on the TV was the man himself.
