Reception seems to be much better in the south (e.g. Palma / Pto Andratx)
Never heard of La Font. But there may be one here.

A lot of <private> holiday lets around here reckon you can put up a 60cm dish and get UK TV just like Spanish TV. And up to now you can receive a few UK channels that way - although unreliably.

The big towering holiday apartments and hotels in British dominant areas all have massive dishes on top. I'd have to say at least 2M. But like I said, we have 1.5m and we still receive everything reliably.

I suspect that the majority of holiday let owners have no idea that the changes in reception will be happening in Feb.
Holiday makers arriving this summer looking forward to their Corrie etc are in for a shock .
I also think that with the low level of rental returns few owners are going to spend money on bigger dishes etc.
Any Bar with wifi is going to do a roaring trade as Mr Mrs + kids sit there watching their Ipads etc.

The first satellite is already up & running. The next one is a very similar design, so it's not likely to be radically different. I suspect southern Spain may experience the difficulties you elude to as they have from the first one, but up here, most of the majors already have at least 2M dishes in a place where 1.5m is more than sufficient. Many private let owners haven't a clue anyway, and never did, so TV will remain just as bad as it was last year for them. Many here only have Spanish or German TV anyway.

Also, English expat bars tend to have Sky & Sky Sports. Sky is encrypted requiring subscription, and doesn't need to narrow its beam. In fact, they would lose a lot of subscriptions by moving to a tighter beam, and therefore are not likely to.

Also, here in Mallorca, you're lucky to get so-called "high speed" internet which in practice will sustain ONE low resolution TV stream. But you have to be lucky. I can just see it now.. 100 people with iPads at a bar all streaming the big game in HD through a 1Mb internet connection with a cheap router with zero traffic management. Yep. It's a brave new era, folks.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned so far are "Data caps". These exist on all mobile phone data contracts but are very rare for land line based ADSL.

If the ISPs introduce caps or even implement their "fair usage " policies, regular use of IPTV would be dead in the water.

I don't know.. there are two "Cala Figuera"s and several other examples of more than one village with same name.. just on this island alone.

Our large Community (80+ houses) on the Costa Blanca had a communal dish fitted a few years back. The Community went for the cheapest price which resulted in an unreliable system. Such things as cable runs being too long because of where the switch boxes (amplifiers) were located. Also the infrastructure was not fully weather proofed.
(Of course, the installers are no longer in business)

I'm sure someone like 'The Guy' would have done things differently.

Now, a few years on, many people have opted out and installed their own systems - either locally relayed, or a full dish.
A complete mess because of the stupidity of cutting corners at the outset.

If a proper job had been done, everyone would have been happy and the skyline around the community would be a lot neater.

Unfortunately there seems to be very little interest in getting things rectified, which is understandable if people have forked out for their own systems.

Interested to hear of any other similar situations.

If that's a question, the answer is yes. Rock solid without any problems.

We have friends about 10km away with a 1.2m dish that Niel helped them install, and they also get everything - including 4HD and all the 5's - clear as a bell.

Probably worth noting that they bought the dish second hand for €50 from a couple who bought that €199 internet TV box advertised all over here. They figured they could sell off the satellite dish and sky box, presuming it was obsolete anyway. Unfortunately the internet TV box didn't work very well, and so they ended up buying another dish - along with one of those combination HD Satellite + Internet TV boxes which gives them everything the €199 box did, plus movies and a lot more. Whole kit with dish and box (new) was just around €300. Now like us, they have both worlds.

If they were to do that, they would be playing into the hands of "Europa"!

It would be more likely to put him out of business as I assume his IPTV clients use ADSL.

Europa net. isn't a "him" it's an ISP company, and their main business is ADSL line rental, and WiMAX for those who don't have a fixed landline. They also have an excelent UK TV service (over 40 channels). So you see anyone trying to introduce caps, would be playing right into their hands!!

The max they offer is 10Gb which its pretty poor, if I had a 25mb line with a cap I would not be reducing it to a 'MAX' line of 10Gb.

also you and the 'bat' forget that some people had internet for their own use, so TV is taking it out of what they had already, If I was to choose that option I would have to have it as a seperate line which makes it not worth having.

Hello Andy,
I'm glad that you did your research before posting
Europa ADSL is rented from Movistar, and the only limiting factor is the customers connection!

So there website is incorrect then ? With the 10Mb Max big pictures all over the website and there Daily Mail adverts. I think they need to get there shop in order first rather than telling me I need to research what they don't tell you

So if Movistar cap there lines then they will be capping Europa too as that is how it works. So Fred was right.
