Hi
Yes I confirm that we´ve lost most channels, BUT a question, there used to be signal boosters - do they work on cables to satellite dishes?

Yes they do work, to help boost a signal.
but they are pointless if your dish is too small to receive those signals in the first place as there is simply no signal to boost!

Will there be any more changes or have all the channels that are going to migrate done so now?

Hi The Guy,

Thanks for that - I thought I had read one of your posts that said the signal was there but just that it was weaker; do correct me if I am wrong It was just a passing thought - I don´t like the idea of IPTV even if it is currently working - I still worry about the European union decision that reselling BBC1 etc., is illegal.

And I admit defeat - I might have gone for a three metre dish, but if that is not going to work, then I´m not going bigger

Where can I get a 100dB gain 0.0001db Nf LNB? Failing that where can I get conversion details enabling the present 28E LNB to boil water? at least I might be able to get a free cuppa once a day.

I think that it all a big conspiracy financed by the shopping channels apart from SKY news those are the majority of the remaining channels.

Is satellite broadband a potential solution? A member of our family who is more IT-competent than we are (not difficult) has recommended that we consider something like Tooway. Would the download speed (if that's the right concept) be enough to support live TV?

I think so theoretically but, like terrestrial broadband, I would have thought that it would be prone to slowing down due to heavy use.

I have a friend who uses it - I will see how they are getting on.

I think you said that you get this from a communal system with a big dish so it's not surprising. What size is the dish?

Fred I believe it is at least 2.5 mtr.

I do not want to ask at the moment because I believe the engineers are rather busy, but will do so as the opportunity arises and post the info.

Here's my penny's worth - I'm in Mijas....
I upped my broadband package to 10MB (appreciate this isn't an option for everyone) - subscribed to a smart DNS service as an experiment - managed to get my internet provider to allow the smart DNS servers (just had to pass on the numbers the Smart DNS service gave me) - voila! BBC iplayer (and others) working a treat. With the increased BB speed I can now watch all the HD content by connecting my laptop (via HDMI lead) to my standard Samsung LCD TV and the quality is fine. The issue is with the live streams - they still look awful. It still makes me think I should buy an IPTV box like WD TV Live (which seems to get the best reviews) and just change my viewing habits (which may be difficult come the World cup!)

Naturally, ALL ISP's offer the "fastest and most reliable" internet. The hard reality is a very different story. In fact, you're probably in the top 10% of lucky ones, if not higher.

Given the unpredictability of today's internet infrastructure (particularly in Spain), in order for live TV streams to reach the widest audience, the broadcaster has have no choice but to keep the bandwidth at the lowest common denominator, or else most people won't be able to achieve an enjoyable experience and therefore, simply won't use it. It may not look great, but at least most people can receive it.

Movies and catch-up are different because they can buffer much of it to your local storage. In many cases, you "order" the movie (Apple TV does this), and depending on your internet connection, in a matter of minutes to a few hours it's mostly (if not all) downloaded locally and ready to play in glorious HD, using the internet only if needs to refill the buffer, which makes it a lot less susceptible to the slow and unpredictable internet performance that most of the population doesn't even realise they live with (despite what your ISP may claim).

We're near the distribution point so we're getting a pretty consistent 9.5MB. I appreciate what you're saying re the streaming quality though. As the old saying goes 'you can't polish a turd'....

Thanks, I would appreciate the exact size as there have been reports that 3m is still not big enough and Gib is probably the worst case in the SW for reception.
