Smile Advice needed about benefits and pension!

Hi, I m new to this but need advice, as we re looking to move to Spain as we have good friends there. My husband is 65 and gets a State pension and Severe disibility allowance, but I m only 54 but get DLA for depression. If we move to Spain will he get any allowance for me, and will I still be able to have my DLA? My severe depression seems a bit better in the open spaces and warmer weather, its very hard back here. We just would like an easier life with our 2 dogs. We were looking to rent on the campo near our friends in the Hondon area and let our house here, but difficult to find rental that takes dogs, so we think the only option is to sell up here, and buy there instead, its all a bit confusing what to do! We just need to know that we can afford to live there. Sorry bit of a long post! Kandi.

Hi Kandi

Firstly, your husband will qualify for full Spanish Health Care as he is of pensionable age, and so will you as his dependent. You will need to apply to DWP Newcastle preferably before you come

Make sure you have claimed your Winter Heating allowance before you come, as I believe that is then exportable.

You wont get any allowances in Spain from the Spanish Government, but I understand that some parts of UK Disability allowances are exportable to Spain. You really need to check your circumstances with the DWP or relative department.

Depending on where you are thinking of living, its often been said that an income of €1250 - €1500 a month income is ideal (excluding rent) for a couple living in Spain

My advice is do not sell your house in the UK but rent it out. This will give you the option to move back if necessary. Rent in _Spain. I am sure you will find somewhere that will accept animals there are a lot of desperate people out there who need to cover their Spanish mortgages. Where abouts in Devon are you?

Hi Mitzy's Boys Gallery and Chiclanagir, Thanks for replies! I m glad to see that as my husband is a pensioner I can get some healthcare in Spain as was worried about that. Am presently looking at DWP pages ref my DLA, not always so easy to understand in government speak though! We live a couple of miles from Plymouth in the U.K., we know that we can rent our house here okay, but my friend in Frailes has put out loads of adverts in shops etc. and asked all of her friends if they know of somewhere, pref. campo, that will accept dogs{well behaved} so that we could rent at first but have had no luck. I ve also been in touch with estate agents etc. over there but nothing, as they say its hard to rent there with dogs, which I dont really understand as when we stay with our friends everyone seems to have dogs on their properties! Will keep looking, but really want to move! Kandi

Is there a local web site or freebie newspaper that you could advertise in? I am from Torquay and still love going home.

Hi Chiclanagir, Torquay is really nice, but a bit cold and wet right now! We do have the local free ads paper, which I d not thought of so thanks for that, will buy it tomorrow and see how to place an ad. We thought it would be easy to rent with desperate people with mortgages but getting bit depressed. Thats why we re thinking of buying. You must miss Torquay in the summer as we go there alot as its so nice! Think I got MitzyBoy's name wrong, so sorry about that! Thanks, Kandi
