Default Advice on moving to Spain with 8 year old child

Hello, my husband and I are planning to move to Spain in 2 years. We will both be retired but not state pension age. Our main priority is finding a good local Spanish school for our daughter who will be 8 years old. We would like to live in a residential area (not surrounded by holiday homes).

We have just returned from a trip to Spain and we looked at houses in Mutxamel and San Juan Alicante area. Does anyone have any experience of schools in these areas? Or can anyone suggest an area with a good local school?

Thank you

Hi
Cannot help you with schools in this area but one piece of advice as I am not sure if your daughter speaks Spanish is that you get your daughter intense Spanish lessons now (maybe you have started).

In my experience 8 year old is the limit for learning from scratch in a Spanish school

Another thing to consider is that many schools in this area have Valeciano as the first teaching language and more so the further north you go (javea, Denia, Calpe, Valencia etc.) - worth checking

Good luck

Don't forget that, in Spain, nothing is free, the teaching in a school will be, but everything else has to be paid for, exercixe books, text books, out of hours clubs etc. and, of course, you would have to factor in healthcare costs, you would need private cover as access to the Spanish health service is either UK state pension age, contracted employment or working as self employed and paying 'autonomo'

My eldest was just 10 when we moved and had just one year to learn Spanish and Valencian (from nothing) before moving on to secondary school. He managed without having to repeat the year - so it can be done.

However, I think he might be the exception. I would say at 8 your daughter should be fine but no older.
