Advice on finding work with a TEFL??
 

Afternoon all!

Have just recently returned to Fuengirola after 2 years of travelling and living in Holland and Belgium.
I have finally finished my 120 hour TEFL and would like to use that to my advantage whilst I am living in Spain. I have unfortunately little experience of teaching, only a 3 month English teacher volunteer course in Peru, which was 3 years ago.
I would like to teach mostly via private lessons and whilst I do that see if I can get some volunteer work in a academy or local school to get my experiance up.Also are the summer camps worth applying for? I am thinking is it worth advertising by distributing some leaflets or putting up adverts in shops and walls!(You can see people place their adverts all over the streets on electric masts etc)
If anyone could give me any advise where to advertise online or if you have any tips from personal experience or just some guidance, that would be most appreciated!

If you have a degree then Korea and Japan still seem to value your skills and pay well. :fingerscrossed:

OK, call me picky, call me pedantic, call me all the words under the sun - its happened before, and I know its only a forum but ...........

I would have doubts of a TEFL who makes basic spelling mistakes, especially as there is a spell checker on this site.

OK I know we all have our quirky little ways, and I freely admit to making mistakes myself, but a teacher of the mother language shouldn't be seen to be making mistakes

So for example you can search in "madrid" with keyword "english"

Another tip - if you want to earn good money teaching English in private and business classes - move to Madrid.
As you can see from the profiles on this site, you earn typically from 25-35 euros a hour as an experienced teacher - you'll need those rates as the autonomo fee is high, and rentals aren't as cheap as elsewhere in Spain.
Don't go in July/August though - wait for the Sep/Oct pickup.

Ive been considering doing a TEFL course too.I already participate in a weekly intercambio and also I help a group of school teachers with pronunciation.

Every man and his dog wants to learn english around here and Ive been asked so many times if I do more formal teaching.

BUT there are fewer english speakers in the area that I live so we are more in demand.
I read somewhere else recently that someone wanted to learn spanish and to be able to converse more but they lived in an area with few spanish people and almost found it impossible to speak spanish...difficult to believe but I guess true.

This may be true of the Fuengirola area which I presume is still densely populated with english speakers even though lots have gone back to the UK.

I think your idea is good but not sure if you are in the right area for it to be really successful.

I read somewhere above about charging 25-30 euros a lesson...dream on..around here between 6 and 10 euros an hour.

It comes down to choices.

At least half the population of Fuengirola is Spanish (probably a lot more) so there are plenty of opportunities for speaking Spanish - but many English speakers do their best to avoid them and try to only frequent establishments where English is spoken

It must be very difficult if you live in a street of houses all owned by english speakers.

I so rarely hear an english voice but its strange how my ears hone in on the sound.

Its a shame to come to spain and not have spanish friends..they are just the best people ever.

Is there actually anywhere in Spain like this? Maybe the odd street in a certain urbanisation

Anybody want to confess that they live on such a street?

Totally the opposite - The BH and I are the only native English speakers for 2 or 3 streets at least. There is always the nice person who says Good Morning when I say Hola or Buen Dias when we meet out walking the dogs, but to be honest it jars in me. I want them to speak Spanish, desperately, as I want to learn it. But you can't be impolite if you are English
