Best to google local estate agents (inmobiliaria) in the area you are looking at. Then contact people on here who are in the area to check it out.

She is actually living in Sevilla at the moment sharing with a friend who needs to move out as his year abroad is split between 2 countries (France and Spain)... so she is 'on the spot' ... Good advice about trying to go through an inmobiliaria, but when we originally searched for accommodation in September, they were less than helpful

it would be best to do it through an estate gaents so you can be sure of no dodgy business.

If you suspect that the advertiser is not the owner of the property, you could always ask for a photocopy of their deeds & ID document. Spaniards should be used to having to present these document for all manner of transactions so shouldn't be offended by it.

500€ in Santa Cruz does sound suspiciously cheap though. I remember looking to rent an apartment there about 6 years ago and the asking price was 2000€/month for a nice but fairly modest apartment.
