Acetone??????

Hi to all and a very happy 2007 to everyone!!

Just returned from the UK after the festivities and was horrified to notice that a women on the plane was removing her nail polish whilst the plan was parked in the tarmac before takeoff. One of the trolley dollies asked her to refrain as it was permenating the atmosphere but there was not much fuss and she continued with her manicure afterwards. I asked her how she got the (acetone) nail polish onto the plane to which she replied it was purchased in the Duty Free shop....

I was firmly under the impression that Acetone is very easily made into a detenator for explosives and has been used on many occasions before for this purpose. I thought it was a banned substance. :scared:

Did it definitely contain acetone? There are acetone free nail polish removers.

Apparently, as long as you weren't carrying it through check in or the security check, it's OK, anything bought in the duty free zone is allowed to be carried, although some of the items MUSTN'T be taken out of their bag before boarding. Agreed it's rather worrying, but then again there is so much other inflammable stuff on sale in the duty free area.:scared:

The word inflammable always gets me thinking, why if something is not excusable is it INexcusable, or if something is not offensive is it INoffensive , BUT if it IS flammable it is INflammable????

Hi,
Last year when we flew with ryan air. I actually had scissors in my hand luggage that i had forgot to move in to my case.
They were very long and sharp (hairdressing scissors).
My bag went through the scanner and they did not even pick this up.
I was amazed how easy it was to go through.

It is (so we are told) a component in explosives favoured by islamic terrorists
but it is far from easy to make it. All the fuss during the summer about
"Liquid explosives" has really been discredited. You'd need a lot of time and
some industrial equipment plus some other chemicals to make anything that
would endanger an aircraft.
I think a bigger danger would be someone setting fire to it.

It is actually very easy to make, but it is very unstable.

It is the stuff that the "Shoe Bomber" had in his shoe and that certainly would have endangered the plane if it had gone off.

Google TATP if you want more details.

So why on gods earth are they allowed to sell it in duty free AFTER all the security checks. It makes a mockery of all the tight security before being allowed on the aircraft. Another thought does anybody know if duty free have been allowed to sell this stuff when all liquids were banned from hand luggage?

With the money they are making on water and booze, the law may stay in place for a while also.
2 €`s for a 30 cent bottle of water and no Spanish booze allowed through, they are not going to push for a change.

Unless it is the acetone free stuff. Not all nail polish removers contain acetone.

Hola y muy buenos dias,
Whatever happened to the days of preparing one's own toilette in private? Un poco finesse, chica!
Next, it'll be a pedicure, complete with flying toenail clippings:eek: ...oops! no clippers allowed on the flight!
LOL,
Carol
