Default Abraham Lincoln the Film

Just watched someone being interviewed leaving the cinema he was close to tears talking about the emotion portrayed in the film.Heaven know what he would have thought if he'd seen the film properly

OH downloaded this and we started watching it last night. After the first hour we both agreed we'd had enough, it wasn't what I expected at all and seemed to concentrate on the fine detail of political finagling. Perhaps it gets better later, but the bit I watched was just really, really boring. I was disappointed as I'd heard great things about it.

Do you think it's more a "must-see" for an American, rather than the rest of us?

Imagine if you'd been watching the dubbed version

I've seen it (not dubbed!), and I thought it was brilliant, though definitely not the sort of "action movie" normally associated with Spielberg. It is almost like a documentary, the scene where they vote is just like being in a courtroom and the suspense is tremendous (even when you know the outcome!) I hope DDL gets an Oscar.

DDL is an incredible actor, his performance in There Will be Blood is the best I've ever seen

I'm sure this will be good too

I'm not really a huge fan of Spielberg, nor of action movies in general. That wasn't what I expected from Lincoln, but it just failed to engage me somehow.

I don't know if you ever saw the "Eyes on the Prize" documentary series about the Civil Rights movement when it was shown on TV (can't remember whether it was on BBC2 or C4, it was years ago), but that did move me to tears, more than once. Hugely recommended if anyone hasn't seen it.

Probably.

Imagine how a biopic of, say, Disraeli, would go down with a Chinese audience.

I didn't, thanks for the tip, I'll put it on my watch list.

They just had an interview with Spielberg on Radio 4 about Lincoln. Apparently he's been wanting to make the film for years but it took a long time to persuade DDL and he didn't want anyone else.

Anyway, it is about a reformist president in his second term pushing through an almost impossibly difficult change to the Constitution - which does have a contemporary parallel of course. So maybe it will act to remind Obama and the anti-gun lobby that anything's possible!

I think it has a wider appeal though. Abolition of slavery in the US affected half the world, British parliamentary reform probably less so!

It must have something to do with it, though. I actually enjoyed watching The Iron Lady more than I did the part of Lincoln that I sat through, and the central character of that is an object of loathing to me!

Maybe it was just the chance to shout at the telly again?

Lincoln is a well made, well acted, very, very, very slow film. I enjoyed it but doubt I'll go back and watch it again for a while.

Another Lincoln film here for those who need more 'action' in their films

Watched Argo last night, about rescuing some Americans trapped in Iran after the embassy was attacked in 1980. Very good!

Zero Dark 30 about the killing of Osama bin Laden was interesting, historically, but something was lacking, can't put my finger on it.

I do like these films where you learn something about the world though.

I just can't believe Sally Field is 66 - she could be 46

Historic accuracy at a guess Not a bad film though.

The wife and I enjoyed Hitchcock, no violence etc just a nice film.
