Is it about time?

We legalized prostitution.

Disclaimer.

It's late and I admit to having a few beers.

Tonight's interesting topic (after the European Football finished) turned its attention to Prostitution and whether it should be legalized and therefore by definition controlled

The discussion took place amongst men only and the overwhelming view was that it should be (legalized) between consenting adults, capable and free to make such a choice.

Is it not a commodity like anything else on the market?

I would legalise it.

My understanding is that its already legal and has been for decades.

What country are you talking about, in some countries, like Spain, it's actually legal.

I think it is in the UK as well.

Yes, to a degree, it's the touting for business that's illegal. Interestingly, there are thoughts about following the Swedish example and penalising the punter and the pimp, and not the girls! ;)

In most countries the Pimps are prosecuted, in some Italian cities the customers of the girls on the street are prosecuted and sometimes their names are published locally.
I believe that there are now fines of up to 30K euros for street walking in Spain.
In Istanbul there was a state brothel, every morning there was a big queue of guys outside on the street.

Re: Is it about time?

AFAIK its illegal to "employ" prostitutes here.

There are bordels, but they simply provide facilities for prostitutes to conduct their business, for which prostitutes pay a "rental" fee.

In the S west of the UK the police have carried out two campaigns recently.
One was targeted at the sex traffic trade with very young girls being smuggled into the UK and the other was against kerb crawlers accosting any girl they think is possibly a prostitute.
Having licensed premises regularly checked and controlled would be one way forward .

It's going to happen anyway, whether or not it's illegal.

Surely it's best to allow it and regulate it in the interests of all.

If that's true, then I can't imagine why Magaluf has had so many problems stopping their problems. Magaluf has a serious problem with girls posing as "street walkers" who are actually only thieves, who beat up and steal everything from unsuspecting drunken Brits. The local police have been powerless to do much about it.

Do you really believe that ?

Its not a matter of believing or not. I understand the law prohibits employing prostitutes in most places where prostitution is legal, as another way to criminalise human trafficking and slavery.

Fair enough.

Re: Is it about time?

Locally, it's starting to be a problem because it's everywhere since the recession. It's bad enough when you're driving along, but even worse when out walking and you can't get away from the emaciated young junkies from eastern Europe with the haunted eyes. And there are brothels everywhere.

So that's what happens when it's legal as it is here. Perhaps the legalisers from the UK should have a drive around the Costa Blanca first.

(I used to joke about the roundabout girls and still do, but just don't look into their eyes).
