Default abandoned very sweet chihuahua (Orihuela)

I live very near to Orihuela but in the Campo... It seems that someone has abandoned a very sweet little male chihuahua. it's very friendly, I have been feeding it today and at present it is sheltering in a little shed. Although I am very worried about it I cannot really take it in. I already have three dogs in a rented property.
If anyone is interested in giving it a home please let me know and I will show you where it is. I am hoping it is not going to be eaten by stray dog packs or other predators as it is really small. I will even supply you with toys leads and harness. hope someone can help xxxxx

First thing you need to do is have a vet check it for a chip, if you haven't already.

It could just be lost or have been an unwanted Christmas present and dumped because they couldn't afford vaccinations etc. Get the chip checked and if it has no chip, contact the nearest protectora. They will have no problem rehoming a chihuahua.

Its an animal sanctuary where they look after abandoned or injured animals and try to find homes for them. You can find your nearest one here. (The list is on a cat website but these places all take dogs as well.)

There is a facebook group called 'Pedigree dogs for adoption and wanted in Spain. Worth joining that and posting on there if it isn't chipped and needs rehoming. Better if you can get a photo and post that also.

Thanks again... I don't think he's a pedigree although I'm not an expert.. went to feed him again tonight and he seems to have a companion... another dumpee I guess.. maybe someone knows Im feeding the first one and decided to dump another.. this one is not so little but he looks to be younger.. and he also seems to have a broken leg.. he doesn't seem to be in pain but not putting the back leg to the floor, maybe an old break. half of me is glad the little fella has some company but the other half wonders what I've let myself in for...I don't want to have a whole pack of abandonees but I can't just sit back and let the poor mites starve. The strange thing is that where they are is not easily found from the villages. Am I a big softee or should I walk away and try to forget..

Please look after them in the short term and try to re home them or find a Chi group or shelter that will look after them.

No they don't have to be a pedigree as such but on that site they tend to be more pure breeds such as a chihuahua, rather than a mongrel/mixed breed. This breed and other small ones seem to get rehomed pretty quickly on the site. Is its new friend also a chihuahua? Try and get photos of them and if you don't want to join the FB group, put photos on here, send me a PM to let me know you have and I will copy and post them on their site for you if you want.

Thank you... it's nice to know I have some support... I love animals and will do everything I can for them... I will get some pics of them.. the new one is definately not a chihuahua, it's a smallish medium dog, didn't really get a good look as they want to follow me so I have to outsmart them through the orange groves which is tricky in itself.. I feel they are safer where they are with the shelter of the shed that's there.. I am on facebook and will join any group that I think might help as I am sure this is not just a one off... and I will find more and more of these poor mites... I wish I had a bigger house and a bit of land but I don't... so I can only do what I can...

More often than not it's not the cost of vaccinations that make people dump their Christmas dogs - they just get bored with them. Kids as well. It's hard to imagine that young children will happily just dump their new pet but they take on the attitude of their parents.
Chances are they will get another one next Christmas - cheap, easy pressie for the kids, then dump it when they get bored of it.

Alternatively they could just dump it up at their cortijo in the campo as a "guard dog". The dog will be so small that it gets through the fence and escapes, but that just means they can get another one to replace it.

And as for getting them spayed.....don't even go there.

You're right of course. Fortunately things are changing. These days there are big publicity campaigns on the lines of "a puppy is for life not just for Christmas", TV series and animal welfare groups which didn't exist ten or even five years ago. EU regulations on breeding and selling animals are starting to be enforced; two pet shops I know of have closed down.

Long way to go, but in the meantime thanks to people like Doris, Captain's Wench and Fiona, we can help reduce the suffering. But you do have to learn to harden your heart and say no!
