I think you will find if you read back through the history what they got upset about was not the card per se but the awkwardness of getting it. Police interviews fingerprints and the length of time it all took in busy areas. What was most hated was all the queuing for days on end from very early morning till lunchtime then to be told come back tomorrow. Three months between handing in all the papers and being sent for for fingerprinting then another three months to get the card. They always used the old lady of 70+ who stood in the midday sun for 2 or 3 days just to get in.

So petitions were made to the EC and the net result is that the Spanish Government come up with a system that satisfies Brussels and does not bother other EU nationals since they have ID cards issued in their own country but royal stuffs the Brits for being out of step.

According to the AUN and the BOE for Alicante (the official provincial bulletin... read by... almost nobody), the town of Alcalalí took around a hundred 'comunitarios' off the padrón this week. They say that they hadn't been able to make contact despite the fact that the padrón - the town-hall register - lists your physical address rather than your PO Box and that official correspondence can not be sent to an apartado.
Why take Northern Europeans off the padrón - a list which helps the municipality get funding from the government together with licences for school-teachers, police... and, yes, postmen?
Is this the start of something bigger...?

There will be a protest march in Cantoria (small town in inland Almería) organised by local Brit residents for September 18th. They have 23 (!) homes with demolition orders from the Junta de Andalucía. I went up to visit yesterday and meet with the organizers. For those who want to join in, I've written it up at a non-commercial blogsite. Spanish Shilling.

Three hundred Britons (pretty much - maybe a couple of Irish or a German or two) took to the streets of Cantoria yesterday - in an orderly fashion - to protest against the order of demolition on 23 homes in that small interior town. 19 of these homes are in an area within the new ring-road which had been deemed urban by the town hall and later as 'green belt' by the Junta de Andalucía. Once again, two authorities - town halls and Junta - struggling over power with a group of pretty much defenceless homeowners caught in the middle. In the Cantoria case, the 'El Fas' residents are also taking the promoter to court for fraud.
After the march and (a not altogether amiable) surprise visit to the mayor in his office in the town hall, the protestors gave some speeches. Organiser Bruce Hobden, Bob Naya from AUAN, a fellow from Ciudadanos Europeos de Mojácar (me!) and the Priors, who lost their home in Vera similarly to the Junta goons back in January.
A few local Spanish newspapers and radio (anyone living in Almería can get today's Voz de Almería, El Ideal, El Mundo (Almería). A British ITV crew was also present.

Nothing to do with expats. It's the result of the Lisbon Treaty.
