Shipping a car out to SA
Hi
Does anybody have any experience of shipping cars out to SA? Are there any regs/pitfalls i should be aware of? I have asked these questions of some shipping agents but I cannot get hold of the SA customs to clarify some points as my wife is the one with the 3yr WP but the car is in my name. Anyone have any experience ro-ro as well?
Anyway, thanks in advance for any replies.

Why on earth would you want to ship a car to SA?
South Africa's ports are a haven of criminal activity. By the time you clear customs chances are your car will be stripped of its stereo, spare parts etc.
SA manufactures Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota. Unless you've got an extraordinary vehicle, why take the risk of it being brutalised by SA's affirmative shoppers?

Yep - Since all the Seth Efrikens are working here in the UK I thought it'd finally be safe to go work in SA!
To be honest though I am accompanying my wife who has a 3 year contract with a US NGO in JHB. I'd like to get back into the bush and maybe even start a little something using our small saf lodge in Zim as a base. When I hit JHB it'll be IT stuff that will pay my initial bills though.
Do you mean "old lady" or "old queen"? I'm sure you know the distinction but I'm just checking as time in blighty makes the tongue tongue twist!

Dreams we have of a nicer better place that one day zim will be once that ..........zot bob and his flip flops are gone. I was born there and africa is not something you can inherit, it chooses you.
bit like a cut on your skin that's forming a scab and it fells lekker when you pick it- thats the way I sum up Africa.
"walking in the bush.....touching the long grass..... walking in dirt roads...... take a swim in a green dam ......fantastic cool off... lie in the sun on the bank ...... hunting spider runs me... I feel its feet on my face as it ran........."
stuff like that -when the times right I'll go back.

Anyway things have developed since my last post: we are shipping by RO-RO to Durbs (21 days) final destination Zimbabwe. That way no duty in SA and as my wife's a Zimbo - she can bring the car in Duty Free as a returning resident. Once the vehicle is cleared in Zim we'll just bring it back into SA on a TIP.

Hey, isn't SA the car jacking capital of the world now?
Are you going to get the flamethrower installed.
